The CAP documents

Those that are actively against Alito are almost salivating over the belief that the archive documents from the Concerned Alumni of Princeton held in the Library of Congress will contain what they need to stop the confirmation.

Speculation is running rampant that Republicans are in a panic over this. Makes for good blog material if you want to create interest but is it true?

Depends on how much value you place in this:

The New York Times previously reviewed the documents, which are in the papers of William A. Rusher, an early leader of the group and a former publisher of National Review. The Times reported in November that the documents and others at Princeton gave no indication that Judge Alito was among the major donors to the group and was not active in it. In an online interview on Wednesday with National Review, Mr. Rusher said he did not remember Judge Alito.

"He certainly was not very heavily involved in CAP, if at all," he said.

Of course it's possible the New York Times is wrong, but before some of you break out the champagne to celebrate? You might want to chill it for a bit longer....

UPDATE:

Just as I finished this, Senator Specter just stated that Kennedy staff went thru the records at the Library of Congress and did not find Alito's name on any documents, or any lists and his name was not listed on any of the minutes of the meetings.

WHAT?!?!?!?!? The New York Times could be wrong???? Nah. I can'y believe that. I mean they check every little detail, right? Right? Anyone out there besides the crickets?

This whole CAP thing is getting overblown. If this is the smoking gun that the Democrats are looking for to stop the "evil" conservative judge from being confirmed, then I would say that Alito will be confirmed without a problem.

I think you are right about the CAP issue. Alito most likely joined by being told that it would look good on a resume for a better job. This is equal to a seven year old boy being part of the Nazi Party in Germany before WWII. The kid sees parades, parties and other stuff that makes him think that the Nazis are going to bring good things back to the country. He doesn't know about the horrible things that were done to people who didn't fit to the Nazi way of life or to those who dared to publicly condemn Hitler. A very extreme example I know, but if Alito had knowledge of some of CAP's racists views he most likely would have condemned them, according to those who say they know the judge well.

Anyway, The Democrats do not have anything to stop the confirmation. Let's just stop here and save some money. I know that isn't what the politicians are taught to do, but it would be a refreshing change and turn to something that might actually help the people that got these fools in office.

The CAp documents are a lot of smoke over...not much.

I agree with cybersear - if there was a real smoking gun, they would have leaked it weeks ago.

There is no reason to keep this charade up. Send him for a vote and let's move on to more serious domestic issues, like Hamster abuse.

That's virtual hamster abuse, Hist mike, but I am willing to expand. ;)

Watch it you hamster haters...they are lurking and could appear at anyyyyyy moment.

I think the documents are nothing. Unless he did something recently, everyone has to be allowed to make mistakes and correct them or change.

Just to show how rediculous this is, I would love for Alito to ask Shumer, Kennedy and Biden if they subscribe to Time and then hit them for supporting Hitler and Nazis sine Hitler was once it's man of the year.

Now, for something on the other side...
Cyberseaer, Alito was not a child when he wrote about being proud of his membership at CAP...

But anyway, it may be straws people are trying to grasp... Anything to prevent the Supreme Court to take a big swing into Scalia and Thomas' backyard...

I do understand, though it leads me to have a strong headache, that there have been times when somebody had the same thoughts when the Court was swinging to the Liberal side...

I just hope that his confirmation does not mean unlimited powers for the president (regardles of what party he/she comes from), unlimited powers to corporations, even less voice for the everyday joe schmoe, and a return to senseless deaths from back alley abortions (Not everybody will have the means to get to the Dannish medical ship that would be stationed just over into international waters performing abortions, like the one currently off the coast of Portugal).

Smoking gun...naw...it seems more like a red herring...something to distract people from the fact that they really don't have a case against this guy.

Though, I must admit, from the snippets on The Ugly American site, it's nice to know that Alito has a better grasp of the law than those challenging him. Qualification is what's important and I wish that in and of itself was being investigated more. I can only assume Alito is qualified, because nobody has challenged his qualifications.

I don't think abortion will become illegal nor do I think Roe V Wade is going to be overturned. I think there is a good chance he's not going to be as conservative as feared and that one of the other judges will end up being the swing vote to replace O'Connor. I also don't think he was proud of his membership. I read the application from 1985, all he did was list "Concerned Alumni of Princeton, a conservative alumni group". The group he went into a great deal of information about was his membership in the Federalist Society.

I could be wrong, but I have a feeling after hearing all of the judges he served with today on the appeals court that things aren't going to be as bad as they could be.

I don't think Roe will be overturned, but I do think there will be more restrictions.

If they try to place to many restrictions then that alone will end up back in the courts.

What irks me (yeah I know you all have read this before so here I go again) is that for all of the money spent on both sides trying to fight abortion or keep abortion they could have made a real difference in preventing unwanted pregnancies which could make abortion a total non-issue in very rare cases.
