The Kindred Spirit in Dreamers....

If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them...

Yesterday I was talking to someone that I had never met before, the call started out business related and she and I covered that part of it, but it became clear the longer we talked that we shared something. We are both dreamers. While in the course of our real world activities both of us has to deal with the practicalities of the at times harsh nature of reality, the ability to imagine and focus on what could be is not only important but necessary.

It reminded me of an article I had read quite some time ago from a business perspective using the terms Incrementalists (realists) and Completionists (dreamers). This was written from a product problem solving point of view but can be easily taken into other areas of life:

Incrementalists are realists. They have a pretty good idea of what is achievable given a problem to solve, a product to ship. They're intimately aware of how many resources are available, where the political landscape is at any given moment, and they know who knows what. They tend to know all the secrets and they like to be recognized for that fact.

Completionists are dreamers. They have a very good idea of how to solve a given problem and that answer is SOLVE IT RIGHT. Their mantra is, "If you're going to spend the time to solve a problem, solve it in a manner that you aren't going to be solving it AGAIN in three months."

The problem of course comes in if you have too many of one group or if the two groups can't find a way to work together. Or as often happens to those of us who are dreamers, the realists can't see the bigger picture and focus on one tiny little part which makes the dreamers throw their hands up in frustration and walk away. (Yes, I'm sure we dreamers can cause frustration to those who are realists as well.)

Worse yet is when neither side respects the other, it is most often the dreamer who will retreat, leaving the realist to go on their merry way creating the very self-fulfilling prophecy that the dreamer warned about. Temporary solutions are only temporary fixes. If you wrap a piece of tape around a leaking pipe sure, that fixes the problem for now. You can proudly proclaim you stopped the leak. Until of course the leak continues behind the tape and creates an even bigger hole that will end up causing more damage and costing more to fix than the initial leaking pipe.

There are times when the temporary fix makes sense, as long as it is realized it's a short term fix while a permanent one is being worked on. Using the pipe scenario, taping a pipe until the plumber can arrive within the next few days rather than paying a higher fee for an emergency service call for a leaking pipe.

That balance is what is needed, which is why? When I meet another dreamer, I not only rejoice but I feel inspired once again......

I wish you had written about this before I wrote our CEO saying we didn't have enough big minds making decisions here. The Incrementalist and Completionist theory would have fit pretty well.

I must be a dreamer too. I don't get why we do quick fixes here to avoid short term problems at the expense of long term reality. Telling the CEO that the leadership is average on its good days might not be the best solution, but it is either time to start changing or continue to decline in my mind.

I think people respect you more if you acknowledge the problem and fix it as opposed to patching it up and hoping nothing happens in the future.

I think we both knew you were a dreamer too, that's one of the reasons I think we come from the same starting point on alot of issues.

At least you have the article for next time. It's one of those ones that stuck with me. (thank whoever designed the concept of favorite folders)

Speaking of how you influence me...I downloaded some of Krishna Das and found some mp3's of his that are pretty awesome. Favorite so far is Sita Rama.

Thank you!

I got a couple of albums from iTunes. I wanted Live on Earth, but it said it was undergoing maintenace or something. That is my type of religious experience. I want to chant all the time now. There is a one song where he incorporates Amazing Grace into it. I think it is Mountain Hare Krishna

I don't have that one, I'll have to look for it, I think I'd like that one too.

I will see if there is a way I can get them to you.

Thanks me4, I use Limewire, it's probably just a matter of my checking every so often to see who has them. Erin has an ipod and the ipod music thingy, I could do it that way too and just play them on my computer.

Miguel offered to buy me an mp3 player that records too so that I could upload some of my interviews rather than using my old digital recorder for the meetings I go to then transcribing them the old fashion way, but I haven't gotten into the portable mp3 player thing yet. I still burn cd's - yes...I'm old school....

Once you go mp3...

I don't even listen to most of teh music on my iPod very often, but I would be lost if it wasn't there

Just a curious thought here. When does old school refer to three years ago?

*sigh*

You had me until the leaky pipe...

Just last week I re-taped two tubes together in lieu of paying a plumber several hundred dollars to make a pipe that would ensure compatibility between my washer and my floor drain.

Does this mean I'm not a dreamer?

lol - okay I take back the old school.

Stephanie, if you figured out away to save having to call the plumber and it's going to be a long term fix or a short term fix until you can hire a plumber?

Still counts as being a dreamer, unless you declare it permanent fix while the tiny bits of water are welling around the tape dripping on the floor....

Or? You could be a combination of both realist and dreamer, which is what most of us are with differing degrees. Even if you were a realist? We need those too.

I see the fix as more of a semi-permanent thing. I can keep it up indefinitely and it is effective without leaking. It's a matter of connect three tubes together that lead to a floor drain. So for about $10 for the tubing and a maintence of maybe a dollar a year for new duct tape, my "fix" does the job of actually pipes that would cost several hundred dollars.

Of course, I'd like to fix up everything in my house the right way, but that would take about $30,000 - 40,000 and I simply don't have that kind of money.

Whether that makes me a dreamer (since I do work on things that might someday bring in that kind of money, with luck and perserverance) or a realist (because I realize that trying to do it the right way without the funds is not practicable) or a combination...I'm just me and I'm mostly content with that.

Speaking of dreaming...I just got my first acceptance letter for publication for pay, so life is good!
