Maybe I should move

or..Is My Apartment trying to kill me?

I'm working on a few ideas for topics later but got off to a slight delay. Most of of my regular readers know I had an "encounter" with the stairs here and hurt my back recently. We live upstairs, the stair case we have dubbed "The 17 steps of hell" while moving in. A few days ago we noticed that the bottom step was feeling a big funny (wood steps and there was a slight crack) and were going to call Maintenance. This morning as I walked downstairs to get my youngest daughter's things from her father the bottom step gave out with a huge crack breaking in half when I stepped on it. Now my back isn't feeling great again and silly me was not wearing any shoes only socks so I bruised my foot.

I'm beginning to think that for Apartment "K" the "K" means Killer....

Perhaps an exorcism is in order...Maybe that explains why my neighbors next door and downstairs have moved....Or maybe it's not the wind making the opening to the attic storage place "open" at times...(Or maybe I watch too many horror movies)

Sniff, sniff, sniff. Do I smell Lawsuit? Yes, I do. Now, I know that you are a level headed person, Lisa, but I feel that this is neglegence (sorry if spelt wrong) on the landlord. Even if you didn't call maintence before this unfornate event happened, the landlord should have know about the crack and they are liable for any and all damages that have been befallen you. Now, I'm not suggesting millions upon millions. That would be silly. I would say that a range form 10 to 20 thousand dollars (plus lawyer's fees) wouldn't be out of line. That is if are willing to wait for the three to five year waiting period it takes to get the case to trial. Just a friendly little advice from a thrid party hundreds of miles away.

By the way, I liked your new look that you are revamping. It loaded well on IE and the sprial thing looked cool, until I had to read it. Do you know how many side cartwheels I had to do to read the entire thing? And I am not a fit man.

I like the little spiral thingy too, which is why I put it here until I figure out how to fix the rest of the template issues. I'm getting there but I had to quit because the CSS script was making me crazy so it was time to take a break.

You may have a point on the negligance issue but as of yet they still haven't even bothered to call back or to send anyone out to fix it yet. It hurts in a different spot in my back so I don't think I re-injured it. Looks like I'll be making another trip to the doctor and take it from there. I'm just glad it was not one of the kids that it happened to.

So far I'm not impressed with the maintenance here, it's a large enough complex there's no excuse for not having someone over to fix it today.

Thank you oh, df of the most wonderous dictionary and grammar person extraordinaire...

I did notify them of what happened when it was reported. Well it was reported to the answering machine no real person has answered the phone as of yet.

lol ht, they didn't even know I was a blogger.

I am not happy about the no call back. I personally believe a broken step is something that should not take a few days to deal with. I found out why my foot hurts so bad, it's already brusing from where the step broke. Yes I should have been wearing shoes. Thankfully my awesome fuzzy socks were not ruined or I would have really been pissed.

Oh that is so you. I can see it at the hospital.

Dr. - Ms. Ward I'm afraid that we have to amputate your foot.

Lisa - Ok, just don't cut, or get blood on, the fuzzy socks please.

If you monitor blew up in your face, would you check to see if your virtual hamsters were ok before putting the fire out of your hair?

Take pics of the foot and I hope it gets better.

Yes you do know me - lol as to the hamsters or my hair? My hair first as I am rather proud of my long locks (and I hate the smell of burning hair) Then hamsters....

My wife fell down the stairs 2 times in our house, it is a split level so not far to fall. After the second time I took a good look at the stairs, there were two that were out of level, and had a half inch of travel when you came down in a hurry. I took up the stair faces, found that there was only one nail holding the stair support to the adjoining wall. So I shimmed it, put a couple of lags in, and shimmed the stair faces also. No more jiggle, no more slant, no more falls. Its amazing how minor changes like that mean the difference between injury and safety.

Lisa,

I lived in an apartment like that. The good news is it was the catalyst for us buying our house (and going into way too much debt), the bad news is that the final straw is when they wouldn't let us put a permanent fix (at our own expense) on the slide door, which my son used as a means to escape into the parking lot (at least once when only wearing a diaper in the middle of winter) when I was feeding the baby and the only adult in the house. I suggest you consider moving if that is a possibility. Though the legal angle has merit too. :-) You could use that as a down payment on a house!

As per your cool spiral thing...

What is "your own common sense"? How can common sense be a personal thing?

Other than that, very cool!

Stephanie, it's actually a quote from Buddha. It means your own intution is what you should follow, rather than believing something automatically.

I owned a home in the past, twice. Not sure if I will again in the future. It has it's advantages but? Also the disadvantages of me having to be the one to fix everything. It's more fun to gripe about them not showing up to fix it after years of living in a place that was a money pit. With two in college and one more will be starting as my oldest daughter is done there are some advantages to the downsizing we did.

Yeah, I can see why not owning a house would be a plus, in some ways. But choosing where you live (i.e., knowing that the up-keep will be kept up) is important, too.

I just kind of like (and desperately needed) the ability to nail down anything I wanted. A few months after we moved to the new place my older boys opened a window and popped out the screen so they could play in the front yard, which is also conveniently next to the street, (while I was bathing the baby after he made a big, pukey mess of himself). When I caught them I brought them inside and nailed the windows shut. That's just not something you can do in most rental units and something we need to be able to do to keep our kids safe, since avoiding all instances of vomit isn't going to happen.

It was a difficult decision when I decided to get rid of our "manufactured home" (trailer - lol) but mine are older so I don't have the same situation you do. When they were younger it was nice to have a safe yard for them to play in, be able to nail windows shut, etc.

I miss having a garden most, which would probably be the main reason I decide to buy a house once again in the future.

Lisa,

In our county there's public gardening land. It's not quite the same, but if fresh produce is what you want, maybe your area has the same sort of deal. Here the plots are limited so you have to secure your place by February to be gauranteed a plot.

As for the Buddha quote... I figured it was something like that, but intuition is a more reasonable word to insert there than "common sense." I guess it's just how you interpret the quote, since, though Buddha was admittedly cool, I doubt he spoke English. ;-) Common sense, by it's very nature, is not something personal, but something, well, common. Or in the case of contemporary America, actually fairly rare. :-)

I go to the farmers market, but we don't have that type of a land deal out here though that does sound cool.

Common sense is something I wish more people had, as HT often tells me it has become "uncommon" sense these days.

When I found the image I liked it, but then it's obvious I have an attachment to the whole common sense concept with my blog. Though Liberal Common Sense being created is a long story in itself.

LOL, I know my brain is misfiring when someone has to point out such an otherwise obvious thematic representation to me. That's what I get for 'filing' this site under the mental sub-heading of "Lisa's blog." Change made, hopefully I'll catch on a little quicker next time.

No, really, I'm not usually this dense.

It's understandable Stephanie, had you found my blog before you knew me at Watch blog it would be different.
