Asking the obvious question....

After reading this...

If you were claustrophobic? Why would you try to fly in the first place?

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- Fighter jets escorted a London-to-Washington, D.C., flight to Boston's Logan airport Wednesday after the pilot declared an emergency because an apparently claustrophobic passenger caused a disturbance, a federal official said.

The federal security official said there was no indication of terrorism and denied reports that the woman had a screw driver, matches and a note referring to al-Qaeda.

The female passenger aboard United Flight 923 said she was claustrophobic and became very upset and got into some kind of confrontation with the flight crew, said George Naccara, federal security director for the Transportation Security Administration for Massachusetts' airport.

Sounds like a major over reaction:

Passengers were taken off the plane and loaded onto a bus, and Naccara said the passengers were being interviewed. Their luggage was spread out on the tarmac, where it was rechecked by security officials and trained dogs.

Quick scramble the fighters! Why? She might have.....LOTION!

:-)

I guess it depends on your level of claustrophobia and the situation. I knew people who got into tanks and never had issues, but a noise or something could set off a panic attack.

I can tell you that I do not suffer from claustrophobia, but I tell you what, if you ever have a chance to visit Groton, CT or New Port News in Virginia - take some time aside to visit the submarines that are displayed. Trust me after the first few steps into the sub you will definitely feel sardineish (if that's a word) :) - it will seem like the walls are closing in around you.

Though I like the sarcasism, and can never get enough of it, the thing that bothers me is that officals had to deny rumors that she was terroristly linked to anyone.

If the evil events of Sept. 11, 2001 never happened, this would be a non story. Even after the first attack on the WTC, things like this were happening and noone outside the event would care. Though you joke about the lotion, and I'm there with you, it is sad that we are thinking this way and that the media must say the word terrorist before getting all the facts.

All we can do for now is laugh, but realize that we must be on guard. Though this story is messed up and is funny to a certain extentant, what if she was a terrorist and blew up the plane? Would we be poking fun? It sucks to think that way, but we are forced to feel that way and be a bit overprotective. I would like to see that feeling go away soon, but I feel that I won't get to free that way again in my lifetime.

Look at me bringing down the fun. Can we have more stories about stupid politicians (redundant, I know) blowing up their careers. That is more fun to me. ;)

and here I thought my coffee was too strong - I do agree with you though cyber - but I think that the "American" spirit is known to be of a lighter emotion instead of a darker one. We view bad events and feel terrible for them but we always find a way to shine a light in that direction to ease the darker feelings prayers, donations, volunteering etc.. My wife and I have and are going through some tough financial times right now but we look at each other and the most famous words in this family come out "It could be worse" - which as you can see we took a bad senario and compared it to something worse so that the current issue is not that hard to handle.

I sgree Roman, the American spirit always shines in dark times. Though I fear that the darkness is making the spirit candlelight, instead of the rising sun, these days.

Just remember the last part of that phrase, "...it could be raining." ;)

Claustrophobic, or was it yet another seemingly harmless Al Qaeda test of our security?

I wonder...

Scott G said...

What kind of test would that be? Unless they were testing to see how many people restrained her or to "out" air marshalls and procedures

Me4,

Just to check the status of our defenses.

Or, one of many such "tests" to come, to soften and desensitize our alertness...

Our defenses are crap because we are reactive and not proactive. Being proactive is not as politically beneficial
