Virus Hunters....

I found the above linked article at the Washington Post interesting for several reasons. The history of the Spanish flu virus is one that should not be forgotten. While at first I wondered if there was more of a risk trying to find samples of the flu that killed over 50 million people was a smart idea, the possible connection to the bird flu as well as designing more effective flu vaccines is important. To me that's one of the downsides of the flu vaccine system, the guessing involved as to which flu will be the strains to hit.

I also had never heard of :

The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Rockville. It provides pathology services for the military, including autopsies of war dead. It also functions as a kind of Supreme Court for difficult cases. Pathologists unsure of a diagnosis, for a small fee, can consult its experts and send them microscopic slides or other samples for review. Part of the institute's value lies in its pathological specimens dating to 1862 -- 3 million pieces of preserved human tissue.

We may never find a cure for the common cold but the flu? Now that looks like it's possible to at least create a better vaccine for.

Scary stuff. I am going to invest in echinacea, zinc, and Vitamin C just in case.

I'm going to try to get my doctor to give me a written "scrip" for Tamiflu, that I can use if/when needed, plus stocking up on the C, zinc, and Echinacea ;-)

I'm still leery about the vaccines...

I can't take the vaccines so it makes that decision easy for me - lol

I would however like a vaccine that works because it would cut down on my exposure to the flu.

What I found most intersting was how they tried to find this virus years ago, it demonstrates how far science has come in the past few decades. The thought of a military operation full of pathogens is a bit of a scary concept almost area 51ish but with germs.

All I know is that we are all going to die of a strain of bird flu that spreads from birds to people to other people and then to trees and plants. From there it will get in our oxygen through photosynthesis where those of us who haven't died from the flu will get it. The news is very scary lately.

Well me4 if we are all going to die? I suggest we plan one hell of a party and soon.

I've got kids and all their germs. The flu don't scare me. I'm more scare of H. Clinton or J. Kerry becoming President of something.

I'll see your kid germs and raise you - lol

I am thankful for purell hand stuff otherwise I'd be washing my hands alot more.

I'm not sure how much of the bird flu is reality versus hype but looks like we will find out this year.

Don't use too much Purell. Your germs will build up a resistance and get body armor or something.

lmao me4 I'm picturing body armor
