I currently do blogging two ways, on my own domains and here on blogger which is a free blogging service. There are clear advantages to having your own domain, but a great deal of your experience comes down to who you select as the best web hosting company for your needs. Some require a payment of one years worth of services up front, some allow you do pay monthly. Some are more reliable than others as far as downtime which is a huge issue when you are paying for your own domain and hosting. It's easy to be tolerant when a free service goes down, but when you are paying for the domain you want a clear history of reliable hosting services.
Your level of tech skill is an important issue, since some web hosting companies offer more tech support than others. If you are just starting out it is worth it to pay a bit more for one that will help walk you through problems than one that is less expensive but would require some tech knowledge to be able to set blogging software up. There are other factors to consider when you have an established blog, such as this one, for me to move it to a domain, my page ranking and other numbers would have to start again, which can take up to six months to transition. I discovered that when I moved my local political blog from blogger to it's own domain. Do your research and you'll be happy with the end result...
