Link Love Thursday and a question of security...

It's not so much the "scuffle" aspect of this that caught my attention. It was this part of the CNN article:

Members of Congress do not have to walk through metal detectors as they enter buildings on the Capitol complex. They wear lapel pins identifying them as members.

Ummm....sure that's really a great system it's not like anyone could copy a lapel pin.

However, with OTA, you don't have to pass thru the metal detectors either! If you don't know what to do? Don't panic...no need to call for security...Visit The Crazy Rants of Samantha Burns.

So, about this Linkin' Love thing...

How much time does it usually take you and what benefits to you get out of it?

What I get out of it is helping other people get their links out there and hopefully more readers. I could use OTA myself to promote my posts, there are bloggers who host OTA every day of the week. I don't do that as often because I'm happy where I'm at. Once in a while if it's something I think is really important I'll post a link at some of the OTA sites. I've found some blogs that I wouldn't have known about that I read on a fairly regular basis because of OTA.

As for how long it takes? Maybe less than a minute to take the information from the trackback link and update the post with the information manually into the body of a post. That for me is the easiest way to make sure the links count for technorati and TTLLB hits, which is one of the secondary reasons behind OTA. Typically I get between 3 to 6 people who will trackback to me so less than ten minutes a week.

Some bloggers won't trackback posts they disagree with, so far I haven't found anything that I felt was that objectionable. That however is an individual decision that all OTA members make you are not required to promote all trackbacks as a condition of being on the blogroll.

Hmm. So I'd still have to figure out that trackback thingy R_V keeps bringing up before I could join. But, it might be a good thing to participate in, both to get more readers and to find more blogs I find educational/inspirational.

I'll have to think about it!

I always think about joining up too Steph. Last week I even went though the process of getting it ready to do it. Then I got confused about how exactly it works and how I would handle it, So ispent the weekend drinking and thinking

The hardest part was figuring out how to just use the trackback from Haloscan and not the comments, but since I know how to use just that part of the code you know I'll help you Stephanie. Haloscan has the way to do it listed in their forum now because some of us do prefer to still use blogger's commenting.

Me4 for you it would be even easier because you use haloscan for comments.

There was something about setting my site up to automatically ping Technorati. I did that and then got tired of thinking about the rest

lmao, me4!

A drink doesn't sound bad now...

Lisa,

I could certainly use the help. I have a haloscan account, but when I loaded everything on my site it ended up being HUGE and then I'd have to manually switch the comments, which I kind of am way too lazy to do. So, if you know how to set up just trackbacks without it showing up in letters the size of a small eastern state (perhaps Rhode Island), that'd be very much appreciated!

I'll pull out the exact coding and where it needs to be and email it to you tomorrow, that way when you want to try it you'll have it.

Did the huge font happen with the new template? If it did that can be fixed too.

:-)

No, this was before the cool new template. I haven't quite been brave enough to try it again.

Lisa,

How do you handle the Trackbacks? DO you just manually enter the links and then ping them or is there somethign I am missing

Unknown said...

Click on the trackbacks on the front page for this post. The window will pop up. Then you cut and past the info from that into the body of your post.

If you want to send a trackback ping you click on the haloscan link and where it says "Members" then "Manage trackbacks" you'll see a tab that says "send pings" You take the trackback entry listed for that post and enter the info there then hit send.

It feels complicated the first few times then it's pretty simple.
