Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice asked Congress yesterday to provide $75 million in emergency funding to step up pressure on the Iranian government, including expanding radio and television broadcasts into Iran and promoting internal opposition to the rule of religious leaders.
The request would substantially boost the money devoted to confronting Iran -- only $10 million is budgeted to support dissidents in 2006 -- and signals a new effort by the Bush administration to persuade other nations to join the United States in a coalition to bolster Iranian activists, halt Iran's funding of terrorism and stem its nuclear ambitions, State Department officials said.
One Reason:
President Bush’s fiscal year 2007 budget would eliminate funding for the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP), terminating food assistance to 420,000 low-income seniors in an average month.
The President’s budget proposes to eliminate funding for CSFP, and thereby to terminate CSFP food assistance for 420,000 low-income seniors and to put at risk nutritional aid for almost 50,000 low-income women, infants, and children. This cut highlights the problematic priorities of the President’s budget: modest savings would be achieved by eliminating food assistance to primarily vulnerable low-income seniors in the context of an overall budget proposal that would increase the deficit because of the very large tax cuts it contains.
If we cannot as a government afford this program which cost 110 million dollars in 2005? We cannot afford to spend 75 million dollars trying to interfere with another country's form of government.

We need to take care od the USA and its people first
That is where you are wrong. We don't need to take care of our own people first or even make sure they have an equal shot at life. We need to take care of people who aren't really fond of us so that we look compassionate. Helping your own people just isn't all that cool anymore.
Officials said $5 million will be used to foster Iranian student exchanges -- which have plummeted since the 1979 Iranian Revolution
Another little tidbit that really pisses me off. Sure cut college funding for our kids but let's spend 5 million to encourage Iranian students to come here.
Brownback doesn't think 75 million is enough, he wants to use 100 million.....
Of course it doesn't seem to matter that this has been tried and failed before. Not just in Iran but lest we forget the millions poured into Palestine recently. Not to mention I'd bet someone from Iran reads the paper so guys...it's not even a secret...

Now that Haiti has elected an Aristide crony, it starting to look like:
American Democracy: 0
Fundemental Extremism: 3
All we need is one three pointer and we are right back in it. I think we get three points for marching freedom all up China's ass
That's not working either, me4. Our own companies are selling freedom out to the Chinese.
Excellent, love it! »
