S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald

Actual picture from divers

Artwork by Jim Clay

November 10th is the 30th anniversary of the sinking of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald. I still remember when it happened, I also still get chills whenever I hear the Gordon Lightfoot song. The above linked website is one of the best ones out there as far as information for those interested.

Compares the song with the events of that night.

The song has always been both sobering and haunting for me, as is the tolling of the bell and the reading of the names.

And the local ties to this tragedy (as I recall the captain lived possibly in Perrysburg).

Tomorrow will again be a somber night.

I also suspect that someone will be reliving the story, possibly the History Channel.

THree of the crew, one being the captain lived in Toledo. One lived in Oregon, Ohio.

Several others came from Ohio.

I've done alot of reading and research over the years, even went to the museum once.

I, too, remember the sinking of the Edmund Fitgerald quite clearly.

I grew up in Detroit, and know well the Mariner's Cathedral.

(historymike pauses)

I am now looking at the words "Mariner's Cathedral" in a whole new way. As an ex-Detroiter I heard the words a million times, but I can't remember the last time I looked at the words.

Mariner's....Cathedral.

We tend to forget just how dangerous the Great Lakes can be until an incident like the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

That had to be one of the signature songs for the old CKLW-800; they had a Canadian content rule back in the day, and Gordon Lightfoot helped them both fill the quota and entertain the Americans.

Thanks for a moving post, Lisa. I have not thought about this in a long time (other than singing along with Gordon)

Here

Channel 13 has a decent video report, has some of the remaining family members from Toledo.

I read about it because I became interested after visiting Duluth. We have seen some pretty interesting things in Duluth. Once we were up there for the anniversary of the Fitz's departure from there and once for the anniversary of it's loss.

I didn't even know that was what Lightfoot's song was about until a couple years ago at the museum in Duluth

Lisa,
I didn't remember the facts as accurately, but it was 30 years ago...

I saw a very good show about the Fitz on the cable several times.

I'll be looking for it again tonight.

Mike,
Am I correct that the wreck has been designated as a grave site or has some other kind of designation, maybe a memorial or a park?

I'm thinking that some kind of special designation was given to it to sort of "protect" it.

HT, I searched last night and it doesn't look like either history, or discovery channel is doing anything. If you see something let me know.
