Why does this continue to happen?

SAN FRANCISCO, California (CNN) -- Rescue boats and a helicopter set out at first light Thursday to search for the bodies of two children, whose mother allegedly threw them off a pier into San Francisco Bay.

One body was recovered late Wednesday, about five hours after police received a 911 call saying a woman had dropped as many as three children into the water.

This is what gets to me every single time. You have family members that are saying:

Harris suffers from schizophrenia and wasn't taking her medication.

She was living in a homeless shelter with the three children and no one noticed this? Did these family members attempt to take the children if they knew she wasn't taking her medication? Why didn't anyone call Children's Services? Isn't this the type of thing that they should be called over?

Every day people complain about how government is interfering with their lives yet situations like this that could have been prevented? Aren't...

It makes me so angry because we as adults should protect our children better. If we can't take the time to protect them? Who will? Placing her in prison or giving her the death penalty or whatever they decide to do with her is not going to bring those three children back. While we can't prevent all deaths/injuries ones like this one where there were clear warning signs?

Such a senseless loss...

We need better treatment laws, to start. People who need help shouldn't have to commit a crime to get it. http://psychlaws.blogspot.com/2005/10/children-deserve-protection.html

Harris has a right to not take her meds.

Her children had rights too.

Society again fails their littlest members through benign neglect.

Sad, truly shameful and sad...

One of the family members said her mother was trying to get custody of the boys. I don't understand why if they new she wasn't taking her meds the system did not move faster.

There will probably be answers or excuses later, too late for those three little boys though....

Governments and their bureaucracies NEVER move that fast. THAT is part of their culture.

The courts fall within that "culture" too.

And, the children paid the price...
