Jay Black resigns because he uses a fake name to call a local television talk segment. Ms. McConnell Hancock, lies because she claims she did not "pull rank" seems to get away with this and not one Democrat or Republican in office says she should resign?
It's not her driving with an expired license or plates that is the issue. The issue is how she handled the whole situation. Especially since she is not only an attorney but chairman of council's law and criminal justice committee and president pro tem of Toledo City Council.
At a minimum she should have stepped down from both her president pro tem and chairman of the law and criminal justice committee. Do we care about ethics in Toledo? Tom Noe was blasted on a daily basis for the coingate scandal, yet this is an elected official and I have not seen any demands from the media that she should step down either. Nor have I seen her hounded for comments, only she "could not be reached for comment." (With the exception of WSPD, as I have been told there has been statements on air concerning this)
From the released police video some of the comments she made (complete comments and videos available at above link from the Toledo Blade)
In the video, officers told Ms. McConnell Hancock, who twice identified herself as a public official, that they waited 30 minutes for her to return. They said they couldn't let her drive because of her expired license and plates.
"I don't give anybody else that courtesy on the street," Officer Brown said.
"But everybody else is not an elected official," Ms. McConnell Hancock replied.
One officer told the councilman that a woman on crutches using the crosswalk had to go around her car. The woman looked at the officers and pointed at the car because she was having trouble getting up the crosswalk.
"All I'm saying is I'm asking for the professional courtesy," she said.
"Well, that's all I was asking for when I walked across the street and asked you not to park there," the officer responded.
He said she could have parked in the reserved council spots and walked to court and "everything would have been fine."
"Most citizens would get their vehicle towed and because [Officer Brown] saw you driving, you would be getting a citation for both," an officer told Ms. McConnell Hancock.
"I do understand that. I'm just asking for professional courtesy. I understand all that," she said.
Sgt. Karen Sue Martensen offered to drive Ms. McConnell Hancock to a Madison Avenue location to renew her license and tags so she could then get her car out of impound.
The councilman asked if police would allow her to go into the parking garage and then do the renewals. Later, an officer told her that she "really put us in very, very touchy position."
The sergeant then told the councilman it's "ethics" and said that Mayor Jack Ford "is very, very firm on the ethics question and the whole process. We all sign ethics statements."
The councilman replied, "As do I."
And the clincher.....
"But, and, and I'm not being funny at all, but if I were to call Chief Navarre all of that would be negated. And I'm not trying to go that route at all. That's not what I want to do at all," Ms. McConnell Hancock said.
We deserve better than that. If ethics truly does matter to Mayor Ford he should demand she step down. So should every single Toledo Council Person that believes in ethics. So should the Blade and the Toledo Free Press and the rest of the media. This shouldn't be left to the voters to decide when she runs for re-election. I don't care if she's a democrat, republican, independent, white, black, yellow, or purple. This is exactly the type of behavior we don't need in politics and why people lose faith in our government.
No one is above the law.

I am in total agreement with you here, Lisa. Leaders must lead by example. This women may not have to step down as councilwomen, but definately step down from her position of the chairman.
Ethics is nice when it is convenant, but when we are in a hurry, screw ethics. We have all been guilty of it, even in a small way, just like this inicident. Hell, were are human and don't walk on water. We make mistakes, but when a person puts herself as an example of ethics, then she better take pains that she is true to the example. The clincher for me is when the woman on crutches having a tough time getting to get to the crosswalk becuiase of the bitch's, I mean councilwomen's, attitude that she didn't have to follow parking laws and thought she sgould be fined for it. This is a politican that noone needs. Here in NJ, we have had a couple of Democrats in recent years who have disgraced themselves and the poeple of NJ. Those guys at least resign. I don't need name names, since they have been covered by the news for quite some time. You can Google them under NJ Scumbag Politicians. ;)
As a side note - Lisa, when in the hell do you sleep? LOL
C, I do sleep, lately have been having trouble which is obvious - lol.
I watched the police videos which made me feel even more strongly she should at least step down from the two positions she holds.
The police gave her more "professional courtesy" than they would have any other ordinary citizen. If one of us refused to get out of our car for over a half an hour we would have been dragged out in handcuffs. Nor would the police typically wait a half an hour for one of us to come out after we parked our car in a tow a way zone, especially if they immediately confronted us about parking in an illegal spot. If one of us merely waved them off and said "I'll be right back out" 30 minutes later we would have come out to find our car already gone. I remember the recent story in Seattle I think it was not sure off the top of my head but a woman refused to get out of her car over a parking ticket and they tasered her. While I don't agree with that extreme of action, none of us are against the law. It shouldn't matter if that person is a city councilperson or if her father is a judge.
