Toledo's Fireworks always Rock!

A crowd estimated at more than 50,000 oohed, ahhed, and cheered last night as a July 4th fireworks display burst over the Maumee River downtown with a 20-minute show of vibrant colors and thunderous sounds.

As the Toledo Blade reports, linked above, my family and I were part of the more than 50,000 that were present. We picked an excellent location this year, deciding to stay on the downtown side of the river rather than going over to International Park. Not only was the actual viewing location an awesome one (infront of Owens Corning) but leaving when it was over was much easier than what typically happens. The grassy knoll area where we choose put us in a position where the fireworks went off right infront of us.

Bambino's Pizza had the great idea of going around and selling hot pizzas to the waiting throngs for 6 dollars each. Think they discovered a great easy way to sell pizzas as he was sold out rather quickly.

There were no pesky skeeters either, the breeze was nice and the music could still be heard from our location.

So I give the fireworks performance last night the well deserved A+

We thought we'd be cool and sit right on the docks with the boats and got bombarded with bugs (no mosquitos, apparently because I have no bites). It was like Put-in-Bay with the mayflies. Ick!

It was nice being able to sit away from the crowd though. It took over two hours for traffic to clear up, lucky we had a place to hang out during that.

We lucked out, we were home 20 minutes after we got to the car. So we were home a little after 11 which was pretty amazing. We parked down on Washington Street right by Fifth Third Field.

Planning on same location next year hopefully will get same results. You weren't that far from us then -- Aubrey wanted to sit on the docks but we opted for the nice grassy knoll instead
