Why I didn't want Carty to run for Mayor

Well it's official, the "Carty Party" tonight was held to confirm that former Mayor Carty Finkbeiner has tossed his hat into the mayoral race.

Mr. Finkbeiner, noted for a highly emotive leadership style that could sometimes create tension, said he would be “patient and more disciplined in my emotion. That would be in my best interest,” though he added that his drive — which he admitted could be a “pain in the butt for everyone around” — was what it took to “move mountains.”

I'm not one of the Carty haters out there that exist in Toledo, nor am I Team A or Team B (if you don' t know you probably don't want to). I'm not a Democrat at all. Carty did do alot for Toledo when he was the Mayor before. Granted he brought alot of attention to us like his small PR disaster when he suggested having the deaf live in the homes near the airport as an idea; but he did and does love Toledo and his vision of what he thinks Toledo can become.

I'm not a fan of our current Mayor Jack Ford either (sorry Frank). I am not sure about Keith Wilkowski yet but I do like some of what I've heard him talk about so far on Denny's show. Why this is important to me even though I am not living inside the city limits at this point is what happens in Toledo does affect us out here in the townships.

My biggest fears when I heard this could possibly be a three way race between Jack Ford, Keith Wilkowski and Carty Finkbeiner was OMG it is going to get nasty and that Rob Ludeman, the lone Republican candidate is going to be the one who benefits from this. I don't dislike Rob because he is a Republican (there are some good Republican politicians out there), I don't like Rob because he doesn't seem to be willing to make a stand. What respect I had from him was lost with the whole Steam Plant deal. He has a pattern of voting along with the herd yet stating later he really didn't believe in it.

Could I be wrong about Rob? Yes. However I think Rob is one happy man at this moment knowing that Carty has helped him alot more than anyone might want to admit. If the Democrats fall apart and start attacking each other in more of this A Team B Team bs the real winner is going to end up being Rob and the Republican Party on this one. Speaking for myself, I'm tired of the infighting and name calling and finger-pointing. Carty's announcement means buckle those seatbelts and cover your ears...we are about to enter some turbulance.......

UPDATE: uh oh...Bad form Rob Ludeman, when commenting on (Channel 13) why Carty appears to be ahead in the local polls he makes a snide comment about how he thinks people just repeatedly click vote on Carty and that "his supporters have jobs". Tsk Tsk...the first low blow goes to? Rob....

While I agree with your discomfort concerning Rob and the steam plant fiasco, unfortnately all of the councilmen did that. It was complete b.s.

Wow, The Dems are fighting each other, while the Pubs slide into office without much resistance? Where have I seen that before? Hmmmmmm. ;)

I laughed hard after reading about Carty's comment that the deaf should live near the airports. It is logical, a bit insensative to say in public, but logical. It never amazes me how much entertainment that public officials give us. Forget Survivor or the Amazing Race. Let's just have 24/7 coverage of all politicians and that we entertain us all day long.

Josh, why I picked Rob out of the bunch on that one is he has had several opportunities to "stand out" if he disagreed with something, the Steam Plant was one where he voted along with the rest of them but made public comments to the contrary.

Someone running for Mayor needs to have a mind of their own, and be able to be an individual. Do you sometimes have to go along with what you don't like for the greater good? Of course...I just haven't seen any "spark" from him.

Agree with you the whole steam plant thing is not just on him and was complete bs. If that was truly the best plan? It was mishandled. I still have a hard time believing people are going to spend $1,000 a month for a one bedroom apartment. But I hope I'm wrong.

C, there are many Carty tales, he loves Toledo, and he did accomplish alot but he did provide a much higher level of entertainment than most local mayors do. His whole existance is the reason for the split in the Dems to the whole A and B Team thing. (which sorry every time I hear A team I'm waiting for Mr T to come in and kick some ass) He does seem to still carry a large degree of public support, of course according to Rob, that's all fake - lol but I seriously doubt Carty supporters are clearing their cookies to go back and vote for him over and over again on line. Granted those polls are not scientific but I'm sure all of the local tv stations have a way to monitor the voting.

Hey, HT nice to see you found me here....

The first quote was from the Blade article. It's linked to the post title.

My pick of the moment would be
Wilkowski, unless Ludeman does something alot more spectacular than he has so far. Appears we might be moving back into the actual city limits which means I might be a voter on this one after all.

However, Wilkowski will actually have to start looking more like a real candidate pretty soon it or it will be Ford against Carty. Meaning getting a website and more publicity on his campaign.

I disagree on the Carty did more "to" Toledo than "for" Toledo but not by a huge enough margin to argue with you on that one.

You want buttered or plain?

Btw, HT, my comments on Carty and my memory of the whole airport fiasco are what I posted so I searched it among the many web items still out there on it?

Toledo, Ohio, Mayor Carty Finkbeiner offered a solution to complaints from residents about high noise levels in neighborhoods near the airport: move deaf people there. Reacting to outrage from the deaf community, the mayor said “I didn’t say that it was a good or bad idea.... [just] that it was an interesting idea.”

Lisa,

I checked the links and only one led to part of the old story. The other one was current info.

Anyway, I saw the news conference as it was being originally aired and I can assure you that Carty was reading the suggestion from a doctor's letter. It was sent to him and it was a sample of some of the ideas Carty had received from citizens.

But it is now stuck to Carty as if it was his own because that is how it was incorrectly reported.

That's just another reason why I never talk to reporters. They don't listen and never get it right (in my experience, anyway) :-)

HT, I didn't see the first news conference back then, so my memory of it was based on what I remembered from that time period. Back then I wasn't as politically aware I was more in the younger children "mom zone".

So in the future I will make sure if I ever mention Carty and the whole deaf issue that he was only reading a suggestion rather than it being his suggestion.

I agree the media isn't always accurate and I appreciate your input in providing me with some info I wasn't aware of.

Lisa,
I do find it odd that I would be defending Carty on this one, but I do the same for other politicos.

Apparently, I do it just to set the record straight ;-)

And, whether or not I'd vote for them has no influence, unlike the local rag. But, enough of my picking on the "Philadelphia Blunder," and his penchant for playing the puppeteer.

HT, I appreciate your honesty and the correction as I feel the same way you do when it comes to stories being reported incorrectly or things being taken out of context. It happens too often as it is so if someone knows the real facts? That is very important.
