As I read the article in today's New York Times I wondered is this really the Republicans:
Republican-led House on Wednesday overturned contentious rule changes made to the House ethics process, with Republicans saying they surrendered to the Democrats to try to restore a way to enforce proper conduct in the House.
"I am willing to step back," said Speaker J. Dennis Hastert of Illinois, the moving force behind ethics revisions forced through by the majority in January.
orrr is it put up or shut up time about DeLay...As well as having this issue demonstrating that there are democrats out there who may be saying:
Democrats say Republicans are trying to tar others to minimize Mr. DeLay's troubles. They said privately that they believed they could better withstand a partisan ethics exchange than the Republicans.
Personally I agree with John at americablog who stated no Congressperson should be allowed to take trips paid for by any donor. That the trips should be funded by either the Congressperson themselves or some government travel voucher system. It would eliminate any future questions and as he suggested make these trips if necessary be about real business not a free vacation spree because if government funds were used they would be much more careful in their behavior.
After all they are supposed to be working for us....not the lobby groups.....

I have to suspect that this move has something to do with Mr. DeLay's troubles. It seems that all we see is childish behavior from both sides and not nearly enough cooperation on issues of real importance. You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours. Or maybe more like...don't give me any crap about my pet issues and I won't give you any crap about yours, okay? Just more politics as usual inside the beltway.
The GOP has done a great job of painting the Dems as "unwilling to compromise" and engaging in "politics as usual" - but that's mostly, well, crap. Yes, the democrats were unwilling to compromise on the ethics rule changes - but you should be unwilling to compromise on completely inappropriate measures. You're not gonna compromise when the guy with a gun to your dog's noggin says "hey, we can reach a compromise - i'll just shoot him once"
I don't so much think we're seeing childish behavior, as an abuse of power from the majority, and the only possible reaction from the minority. Politics as usual is, as you say, "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" this is more along the lines of "you scratch my back, or we'll kill this dog" (apologies to National Lampoon).
My underlying thought was that the Republicans were up to something. Either there is not as much on DeLay that can be proven, or they would rather sacrifice him than keep stalling on the ethics change.
Now that the media has pointed out other congresspersons, including some democrats, the Republicans are trying to shift attention away. Will it work? Depends on who has the most ethics violations at this point.....
