First gay marriage in Iowa...

Story I read from the wires from Fox News, First gay couple legally married in Iowa after judge rules state ban unconstitutional some key points from the article:

On Thursday, Polk County Judge Robert Hanson ruled that Iowa's 1998 Defense of Marriage Act, which allowed marriage only between a man and a woman, violated the constitutional rights of due process and equal protection of six gay couples who had sued.

The ruling cleared the way for gay couples across the state to apply for marriage licenses in Polk County, and more than a dozen had by Friday morning.

County attorney John Sarcone promised a quick appeal, and he immediately asked Hanson for a stay that would prevent gays and lesbians from getting marriage licenses until the appeal was resolved. A hearing on the stay request is likely next week, said Camilla Taylor, an attorney with Lambda Legal, a New York-based gay rights organization.

In the meantime, the applications began rolling in.

The marriage license approval process normally takes three business days, but couples can pay a $5 fee and get a judge to sign a waiver allowing them to skip the waiting period.

My personal opinion is that marriage is normally a religious service, that the state should have no involvement in marriage at all. Even though I clearly understand from a historical standpoint the word "marriage" has been used to define a partnership that without the religious ceremonial aspect is for all practical purposes a civil marriage, which is what a true civil union should be as opposed to the way it's been diluted to be something less than a civil marriage. Everyone, regardless of their sex should have the civil union option from a state basis and if they want the religious marriage ceremony? That should be up to them. The legal protection currently offered under "marriage" should be the same offered to those who apply to a state for a civil union. It would solve the whole problem...which is why it will most likely never happen.

Looking to relocate?

Tired of where you are currently living and thinking about taking the huge step of relocating yourself or your family to another part of the United States? Before the internet it was much more difficult to find resources to help you make such a transition. Now, with companies like National Relocation.com you can use the wonders of the internets to find out information that is critical to your decision. Information like real estate values or important needs like mortgage quotes are available on their easy to navigate website.

In visiting their website and looking at the different categories of information that they offer, the only thing the site doesn't provide would be helping you find the job to relocate too. They even provide a listing service houses for rent. A good majority of employers do not help with relocation assistance, which makes this site one I recommend bookmarking for those who are dreaming of greener pastures...

Iraq meets 3 of 18 Benchmarks..

In most places meeting only three out of 18 benchmarks would be considered a failure, and it's really hard to find any promising news with the latest draft of a Government Accountability Office report. Except I suppose if one were really reaching for any kind of a positive spin they would say three was better than none.

It appears from how this is being reported that:

The draft provides a stark assessment of the tactical effects of the current U.S.-led counteroffensive to secure Baghdad. "While the Baghdad security plan was intended to reduce sectarian violence, U.S. agencies differ on whether such violence has been reduced," it states. While there have been fewer attacks against U.S. forces, it notes, the number of attacks against Iraqi civilians remains unchanged. It also finds that "the capabilities of Iraqi security forces have not improved."

What is also disturbing is the rationale for the report being leaked to the Washington Post in draft form:

The person who provided the draft report to The Post said it was being conveyed from a government official who feared that its pessimistic conclusions would be watered down in the final version -- as some officials have said happened with security judgments in this month's National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq. Congress requested the GAO report, along with an assessment of the Iraqi security forces by an independent commission headed by retired Marine Gen. James L. Jones, to provide a basis for comparison with the administration's scorecard. The Jones report is also scheduled for delivery next week.

Tennis anyone?

I used to be an avid tennis player, and while my tennis racket has gathered dust these past few years I still follow two main tennis events. The US Open and Wimbledon, it is US Open time and I really do enjoy the New York Times US Open coverage. They promise through their online blog to cover every serve and volley and so far they've done a pretty good job in keeping that promise.

On my ever growing list of things I'd like to do, being able to watch the US Open in person is one of them.

History and Culture of Dominican Republican alluring...

With part of my husband's family living just one island over in Puerto Rico, the idea of visiting the Dominican Republic has been one that is on my list of places I'd love to go. The differences in the culture of the Dominican Republic compared to other islands in the Caribbean is very intriguing, while all share some Spanish influence most of these islands, including the Dominican Republic have managed to keep some of their individuality when it comes to tradition.

The United States has been involved in the political history of the Dominican Republic from time to time since 1916. It was because of the United States political influence that Rafael Trujillo ended up being placed in a position where he became a dictator. Tourism has been one of the factors related to helping this area even during past political upheavals. One of the major attractions to the Dominican Republic is almost 800 miles of beaches. I'm one of those who like to head off in the path of the not so touristy spot, which makes Barahona, the "Pearl of the South", sound like a very appealing location. Who knows, someday in the near future I could be live blogging from Barahona...

Air Traffic Control System to be upgraded...

Back when my father was alive and was a pilot it was obvious an upgrade was way over due, now, several years later, it appears this might actually be happening according to this NPR piece, Air Traffic Control System Gets Overhaul. This is good news especially for those who are Air Traffic Controllers but also will make flying easier and safer for pilots and passengers.

The federal government on Thursday will award a $1 billion contract to begin modernizing the nation's air traffic control system.

The contract is a long awaited first step towards relieving growing congestion in the skies. This summer has been the worst on record for flight delays, and government officials expect air traffic to double in the next 20 years.

Democrats split on terrorism

This morning's Washington Post has an article that delves into the topic of, Terrorism Policies Split Democrats.

At the Democratic-leaning Center for American Progress yesterday, panelists discussing the balance between security and freedom lashed out at Democratic leaders for not standing up to the White House. "These are matters of principle," said Mark Agrast, a senior fellow at the center. "You don't temporize."

As the article points out, the ACLU is running an advertising campaign that involves sheep, this is quoted from the WaPo:

"Bush wanted more power to eavesdrop on ordinary Americans, and we just followed along. I guess that's why they call us the Democratic leadersheep," say the two farm animals in the ad, referring to Congress's passage of legislation granting Bush a six-month extension and expansion of his warrantless wiretapping program.

Coming here from Lucas County were are Democratic Party is so divided that there is an "A" Team and a "B" team, I think some of the same philosophical differences that led to the split here that has gone as far as Democrat attacking Democrat is happening in on a larger scale in the Democratic Party as well. The fear that the Republicans will use the theme that the Democrats are "soft on terror" has worked when it comes to creating terror in some Democrats to stand up for what they believe in.

The benefits of a writing community

As some of you who are long time readers know, I wrote and self-published a book a few years ago. It was a great experience but there were times when I could have used advice or it would have been helpful to have access to those more knowledgeable than I was during that process. The concept of a writers circle is not a new one but with the technology of the internet this makes it easier than ever before writers to share information and to learn from each other.

I spent quite a bit of time visiting http://www.mywriterscircle.com, My Writers Circle, it is obvious it is a long established online forum that has been in existence since 2005. The various options the writers circle offers is impressive, from providing information on possible jobs to critiques of various forms of writing. The membership appears to be active and from the posts I read, opinions were being offered with honesty with constructive suggestions to those who asked as opposed to only offering critical commentary. If you would like to become a better writer, or are a writer who would love to participate in a supportive online group focused on writing? I recommend visiting My Writers Circle.

GOP experiencing worse conditions than after Watergate?

The title of this post is taken from a Washington Post article, These Days, a Not-So Grand Old Party. While I recommend the article, some selected parts:

From the intoxicating heights of President Bush's 2004 reelection victory, the GOP has fallen into a state of disrepair that rivals the party's low ebb after Watergate in the 1970s. In some ways, conditions may be worse today than they were then.

Whoever leads the party into the 2008 general election will be saddled with responsibility for charting a vision that offers independent voters a credible break from the record of the past few years while reenergizing a conservative coalition that has been vital to the party's achievements.

The party's political success over the past three decades was built by assembling a conservative coalition based on economic, security and moral issues. Consider the ways in which Republicans have surrendered the high ground on all three.

First, opposition to the Iraq war has dramatically reduced the GOP's advantage on defense and national security issues.

Second, the party that once prided itself as responsible stewards of the public's money has squandered its reputation for fiscal discipline.

Third, on moral issues, the party faces a crisis of hypocrisy.

While I realize the war is considered by many to be the number one issue, from my part of the U.S., the financial responsibility aspect is one of the more frequent complaints heard. On the issue of morality, from a historical standpoint many of our elected officials breached what as preached as moral behavior. The main difference now is that people are more aware of these areas considered moral misconduct, and there are many people out there that expect politicians to be less than honest. While we may hope as we pull that lever or mark that electronic voting screen that the person we are voting for will actually follow through on their promises, all to often it's realized the promises were false...

Military Moms and will they vote D or R?

I'm always hesitant to lump groups of people into one category when it comes to assuming how they will vote. When John Kerry was running for president it was believed that college aged students could be a huge force at the polls when it came to supporting him. The reasons people end up supporting a candidate when it comes to the large numbers of those who are not closely affiliated with a specific political party can be impacted by the virtues of a candidate or even as a negative response to one of the other candidates. That said, as a part of the "At the Diners" series that the Washington Post is doing, today's article focused on Military Moms May Be a Force at the Polls

While I'm not sure how large of a trend this will be or if it will truly end up being "a force", it does raise the issue that some are looking at this issue seriously:

One need look no further than down the counter at the Red Arrow to find a military mom, Elaine Boule, the manager, who lost a brother-in-law to the war in Iraq and is about to abandon her lifelong pattern of backing Republicans to support a Democrat, possibly Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.)

Is Elaine Boule one of the only ones to feel that way? That will be discovered in the weeks to come...

More California Law Firm blog love...

We discussed the other day how law firms were making use of the internet from a marketing and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) standpoint to help them use today's technology as opposed to the traditional advertising of old to reach out to people. Rather than rely on word of mouth or print medium advertising with the increase in technology the message from a firm of Los Angeles Criminal Defense Lawyers | Experienced California Criminal Attorneys is instant. Using keyword technology on blog postings those who later are looking for an experienced firm that specializes in aggressive representation that is ranked in the top 5% of California Law Firms increases the odds of those searching online for a specific legal need finding their website quickly and enhancing their website visibility.

Opus deemed too controversial?

Can we no longer laugh or have we gotten so pc that it's not possible anymore to realize that cartoons, even those with a political slant are permissible here in the US? That is the question one has to ask when you read about Opus being pulled...

What is the horror that this cartoon dares to cover?

I can't help wondering at times how far we go in pretending to be pc when in reality we are not...

How I will avoid a year of stolen pens...

Years of children in school has taught me one simple fact, school supplies that are bought such as pencils and pens disappear. By making use of advertising pens I as a parent can help to ensure that pens do not disappear as quickly since it's very inexpensive and easy to order pens with my daughter's name on them which ends the question of "did you see my pen". It's also a great gift idea for teachers, ordering them pens with their name on it gives them something they can use and I have always gotten a very appreciative response from teachers we have done this with.

Viva Las Vegas!

One of the trips my father and I mentally planned but were never able to do before he died was a trip to Las Vegas. He had gone to Vegas many times and enjoyed his stays there, and he and I agreed the idea of me escaping from my five children with him to have a few fun filled days staying somewhere like the Caesars Palace would be an enjoyable adventure. It's still something I think about from time to time and would love to do, knowing that I was visiting some of his favorite haunts there...

The frustration in trying to do the right thing...

One of the most frustrating things about my other blog, Glass City Jungle is the frustration that at times comes from the way I do things differently than here on LCS and the decision on how to do the right thing. Here on LCS, it is more about me and my opinion, on Glass City Jungle it's designed more as a way to facilitate information sharing and I try my best to keep my personal biases and my personal feelings out of the mix.

Glass City Jungle is one of the top ranked personal political blogs in all of Ohio, it takes quite a bit of work and an personal investment of myself to pull that off. I know I subject those of you here who are my loyal readers to sponsored postings here, I don't do that there, and at times I have to be honest, I miss the ability to just be able to vent which is why Liberal Common Sense will always be my favorite place to blog, even if it's not as popular as Glass City Jungle.

The high level of pettiness within some of the blogs in Ohio amazed me, there are actually people who have purposely voted Glass City Jungle as "terrible" in the ranking system developed by Blognet News Ohio, you might think this comes from the "conservative" side of the Ohio blogosphere, but it doesn't, it comes from those who realistically should be happy that GCJ is out there. This leads to moments like today when I discover that there are those within the Lucas County Democratic Party taking smack about me and that particular blog because I'm trying to do what I think is right. It reminds me of a conversation I had with my almost 13 year old daughter the other day when I stressed to her that for the rest of her life she would be placed in scenarios where she had to decide between what is right and what is popular, that it was something that I still at age 47 had to struggle with at times but that in the end, doing what is right is the preferred choice no matter the frustration or those who diss rather than support transparency....

Update on Darfur...

As most of you know I have followed the scenario in Darfur for several years how though I don't blog about the issue as much as I should. Hence this update on Darfur as far as the attempts to create an U.N.-African Union peacekeeping force is some what optimistic news in relation to pledges being made.

There are still needs, and it's obvious the longer this takes the more who will die while waiting for this latest peace keeping attempt to start. There is also the reality that some of the troops sent in the past have committed atrocities and it appears at least from a planning standpoint this is being addressed more stringently than in the past.

90 percent of the Army's new recruits take $20,000 bonus

My immediate reaction when I read, Many Take Army's 'Quick Ship' Bonus was this was an immediate reflection on our economy when this type of an offer is taken:

Many recruits who take the bonus -- scoring in many cases the equivalent of more than a year's pay -- leave their homes within days, recruiters said. The initiative is part of an effort by Army officials to meet year-end recruiting goals after a two-month slump earlier this year. With the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, the Army hopes the extra cash motivates those interested in joining or entices those just considering enlisting.

Unfortunately, I don't think these recruits are realizing that the $20,000 is taxable, so they are not in reality getting $20,000.00. Nor will they get the money immediately, they have to complete basic training and advanced training first. Which means, some of those signing up and agreeing to leave their homes immediately may have boosted the Army's recruitment numbers but not all of them actually receive the bonus and those that do will see a large chunk of the first $10,000 go to taxes...

Law Firms making use of internet marketing...

The power of the internet from a marketing standpoint is one that continues to grow, as many types of professional services are written about on the internet with the goal of increasing search engine order as well as personal reviews. The use of this cutting edge technology has helped Criminal Attorney Los Angeles | California Criminal Lawyers like those at www.keglawyers.com to reach a larger number of people without expending a high advertising budget.

This creates a scenario where they can promote their firms strengths, such as the lawyers in their firm have over 50 years defense experience and due to the aggressive defense they offer their clients they have a high degree of success with ensuring criminal allegations never reach the courtroom. In providing a picture it gives the reader a way to connect more from a memory standpoint so that days, weeks or months from now if someone in the Southern California region needs an attorney the chances of them remembering this specific law firm have increased.

CBS sued over Kid Nation...

My very good friend C and I had an interesting exchange on the topic of the reality show Kid Nation a few weeks ago here on Liberal Common Sense. An anonymous poster who claimed to be a parent of one of the children on the show also commented during that discussion. Just a short time ago I got a phone call from my best friend Holly who followed that discussion and heard about a lawsuit being filed against CBS over what happened on Kid Nation. She was kind enough to send me the link to Participant's mom raps kids reality show

Part of our discussion concentrated on the issue of injury or liability, so reading this was interesting:

Janis Miles of Fayetteville, Ga., said in a letter that her 12-year-old daughter, Divad Miles, was spattered on her face with grease while cooking potatoes on a wood stove, and that four other children required medical attention after they accidentally drank bleach.

Her daughter also had a rash that had caused scarring, and sunburn on her face and hands, Miles wrote.

The children are to be paid $5,000 apiece when the series airs, and one child per episode was awarded a solid-gold star by the town's elected government worth $20,000, Forman said.

According to documents obtained from the New Mexico attorney general's office, parents signed a 22-page agreement in which they waived their rights to sue the network or production company if their children died or were injured. The agreement also acknowledged that the participants "will have no privacy," except while using bathrooms or changing rooms.

This last paragraph leads to one of my original points, what kind of a parent would sign a 22 page waiver that states in return for being paid $5,000 a week with a chance at winning $20,000 that states if their child was killed or injured they felt it was basically worth the risk. No wonder there didn't seem to be any concerns of liability, parents signed away their children's rights on that one.

Eye of the Dolphin released today...

If you are looking for a family movie that looks like it would be enjoyable for many members of your family, I recommend considering Eye of the Dolphin. I watched the trailer, which I have included here to share with you:

I also visited the website for the movie, Eye of the Dolphin and saw that there is a contest to win free tickets, but I recommend you do so quickly, the contest ends August 26th, sign up is easy online to win free passes at selected theaters, unfortunately none of the theaters in my area are a part of the contest but I am hopeful that the movie will be shown here in Toledo in the weeks to come, since it is not one of the areas where the movie is being shown starting today. This was disappointing since I enjoyed watching the trailer and reading more about the movie online. So, I encourage those of you in an area that the movie is being shown in to remember to stop by and let me know how you enjoyed it, and to take advantage of the chance to win free passes.

Warner says bring troops home by Christmas...

This is August, almost September, and Senator John Warner after coming back from spending four days in Iraq is calling for our troops to be brought home by Christmas, the media coverage on this thus far:

Warner Calls for Pullouts By Winter

Sen. Warner: Iraq pullout should start in weeks

Fox does not list Warner in the headling but part of this article, Report: Gen. Pace to Recommend Major Troop Reductions in Iraq

The Washington Times seems to be using a similar format, Report: Iraqi stability growing

New York Times also does not mention Warner in the headline, Report Offers Grim View of Iraqi Leaders

I'm sure there are more but those will give you a fairly balanced look at the information and how this story is being reported.

Taking advantage of text mobile marketing...

As a part of my blogging that I do locally I do pay attention to the bar/club scene in my area and I've watched many of them try to increase their business by using the internet, especially on MySpace. There are other ways to take advantage of technology and one that is new is the concept of SMS Text Mobile Marketing. Sendaword.com realizes how cell phones and text messaging has become such an integral part of today's society and through using their SMS Text Mobile Coupon Marketing they are making inroads in what is considered by many to be a very creative way to reach out to potential new customers or to let previous customers know about something new and hot that's happening.

Use of this type of marketing can also create opportunities to promote the ability to Text-To Win a Contest or Voting, another great way to get the attention of a customer base. From a cost standpoint this can be a very cost effective way to advertise especially for clubs and bars when compared to traditional advertising costs.

How to be an indian giving parent...

One of the advantages of having adult children is buying them a gift that while being something that they would like and can use, have it also be something that you can borrow when you need it too. A great example of this is luggage sets, I bought my oldest daughter a very nice set as a birthday present and now when I need luggage? I borrow hers, this could also work with very close friends...with the reminder that you do have to return things, else your borrowing days could be over.

Online book shopping...

One of the items I purchase the most online would be books, I enjoy searching for both out of print books and finding ones that have been released recently that are discounted or used. I was able to find every book that Frank Yerby wrote by carefully searching online and it did not cost me hundreds of dollars to be able to meet my dream goal of owning them.

Sally Jenkins nails it...

All of the thoughts I've had on the issue of Michael Vick and dog fighting are covered in a well seasoned piece by Sally Jenkins in today's Washington Post in an article entitled, The Gall Of It All. While I understand those who state that we should feel more outrage over people being treated inhumanely, I do feel outrage over that. I feel outrage every time I realize that we as a nation do not value the lives of others as much as we do American lives. Those of us who are carnivores do eat animals that have been killed, but we have taken steps to try to ensure that even while considered a food source animals do not suffer needlessly nor be tortured.

Dog fighting is not for food, it's not a matter of kill or be killed, it's done for sport, the death can not rationalized and while it could be said Americans don't shed the same tears over the death of a chicken or a farm animal the reality is many Americans own dogs as pets. Is there a bit of hypocrisy in this? Of course, there is a certain amount of hypocrisy in all of us. Yet, as Sally Jenkins points out, the outrage at Vick is not misplaced.

On cats and cars...

When I think about cats and cars I can't help but flash back to the official "cat moving day" of a little over a year ago. The only hardy soul brave enough to help me was my oldest daughter, Emily. Two pet carriers - five cats which equaled two trips of cat moving with one cat that could be held on my lap while driving.

First three go somewhat smoothly except for the sound decibel factor. Pudgy who is the one cat who was not in a carrier was evidently trying to signal help from drivers of other cars. I believe she was trying to communicate that she was being catnapped against her will, however, none of the other drivers seemed to care with the exception of a few who pointed and laughed. That did not seem to amuse her. The other two in carriers, Tangerine and Liono screamed the whole way. I'm not sure what they thought I was doing with them but it was obviously not pleasant from their reaction.

In what felt like a several hundred mile trip we finally arrive. The dog is ecstatic, her cats are here! The cats are not pleased to see the dog. All three head immediately head for the basement, which none of these three have ever seen before. This seems to interest them, well except for Liono he decides to hide under the love seat.

Next round two, the two cats who I thought would be the worst. Axle who is almost 17 and has moved many times and Samson who normally freaks out like a wild caged animal when you try to put him in a carrier. As I am warning Emily to be careful, Samson walks into the carrier. Personally I think he was trying to make me look bad. He barely meows on the ride over. Axle lets us know he is not thrilled with the idea of moving again. Just as we pull up a major thunderstorm starts. All of the cats start freaking out and Liono runs upstairs and discovers there is not a vent cover in the bathroom yet. He dives for the vent, thankfully he was too fat to fall thru the ductwork so I was able to yank him out. Liono is again hiding under the love seat. Samson has discovered the bird feeder that Miguel put on the deck rail just a short time before Tangerine did. Jocking for window positioning has begun. Samson won.

Every time the cats see things go into boxes...I know they fear moving again...

I guess I'm really undecided...

I got an email from Change.org about their new Presidential Matchmaker Quiz, so I headed over to take it. When I hit the button to get my results? I couldn't help laughing as it seems so appropriate to how I feel about the current presidential candidates:

I answered each question, so it's not as if I gave a "no opinion" on each category...

Online Education Database on Presidential Candidates

I received an email today from Jimmy Atkinson who is the creator of the Online Education Database. The site has some really interesting information, it's one I recommend you bookmark but of special notice is an article written on Presidential Candidates on Major Education Issues.

It's a very good look at how the main presidential candidates are covering the topic of education, and I thank Jimmy for sharing it with us as I found it very informative.

Energy savings and outdoor kitchens

Years ago before air conditioning especially in areas where the weather was more hot and humid the concept of an outdoor kitchen or a "summer kitchen" was used as a way to keep the main house cooler and safer from a fire standpoint. With an eye on energy savings, in many areas of the country this type of a concept is making a comeback as a way to be able to use less energy in keeping the whole home cool.

I can't wait for rappers to cover...Rudy...

While Vibe magazine is out there crying it's Obama Time I'm wondering if they will figure out that whole "equal time aspect" that media's supposed to give. If radio stations are going to play songs that promote Obama, then technically since a song is not a documentary, bona fide news interview, scheduled newscast or an on-the-spot news event, one of the less favored candidates could make that an issue.

I doubt it's going to happen, though I find it hypocritical of him to play games. I think this probably says it best:

Russell Simmons, co-founder of Def Jam records, responded in the New York Times magazine, calling Obama a "mouse, too, like everybody else," and saying that instead of reforming rap lyrics, "What we need to reform is the conditions that create these lyrics. Obama needs to reform the conditions of poverty."

In the September issue of Vibe, one of the hip-hop industry's leading publications, Obama agreed with some of Simmons' criticism but stressed that rap music's influence is undeniable.

"So yes, my job is to focus on poverty, education, health care, but I think we have to acknowledge the power of culture in affecting how our kids see themselves and the decisions they make," Obama told the magazine, which put the presidential candidate on its cover above the headline: "It's Obama Time."

Though I can't help wondering...can he dance like MC or will he end up hearing "You can't touch this"...

Sing your troubles away...

In checking out GotTrouble.com’s Video Promotion, if you have a trouble and singing talent, you could end up being $5,000 richer by submitting a video with an original song about your selected trouble. My singing days are long since passed, to the point that people would probably throw rotten veggies at their computer screens but if I had to pick something from www.gottrouble.com, it would be landlord maintenance issues. Why?

Every night I dream about soaking with some bubbles,
Yet the bathtub has a leak which is the source of many troubles...
Sure you can wash, you can scrub but you have to use the shower,
Hence a smart talking lawyer might make the landlord fear our power...

Yes, my song would be the "I got no bathtub blues".

Seven in 10 have no problem with surveillance cameras

I suppose this shouldn't surprise me, but it did, this recent poll on Surveillance Cameras: Fighting Crime or Invading Privacy?. I tend to believe that we should be more careful in how quickly we are willing to give our privacy away, so I'd be one of those three out of ten.

Support for more closed-circuit cameras in public places is shared across the political and ideological spectrum. Two-thirds of liberal Democrats support the measure as do 85 percent of conservative Republicans. In addition, 72 percent of moderates and 71 percent of independents favor the proposal.

Although support is widespread, some groups are less supportive than others. Among those under age 35, 63 percent support the plan, but it's 79 percent of those age 55 and up. Blacks are less likely than whites to support surveillance. And while two-thirds of city-dwellers support an increase in cameras, suburbanites are even more supportive.

Consumer Comfort Index still low...

Economic pessimism is still in negative territory in the Consumer Comfort Index as just release. It's being stated that it is the lowest in two years with fifty-seven percent of Americans now say the economy is getting worse compared to 34% at the beginning of the year. If you want to read even more details on this I suggest visiting the Washington Post/ABC News Post.

Teenage war on Acne...

For many of us the topic of "The war on Acne" would seem to pale in comparison to much heavier topics of late. Yet, if you are a teenager or one of the adults out there that is plagued by serious acne problems to you it's an important subject. Having had five children, most of my bunch during the teenage years had major problems with Benzoyl Peroxide, and if a product they bought to fight acne had too much then they faced dry skin and scaling which to them looked worse than the original pimples they sought to get rid of.

One of the things I noticed immediately about the TriClear acne treatment system was that it contains no Benzoyl Peroxide. If you have looked at some of the prices when it comes to acne skin care treatments some of them are very expensive, you can easily spend well over one hundred dollars a month for some of these products. TriClear does offer a free trial of their product line in which you only pay shipping charges for 14 days, you can read the full details at their website. I always recommend everyone read the full details before ordering anything online to make sure you understand the full terms and conditions before you click that final send. We have not personally tried the TriClear line but it does appear for some people it has worked for them in making them acne free.

Slowly getting caught up...

As you can see by today's posting, I'm slowly getting back up to speed as far as my typically prolific blogging. I'm still fighting off walking pneumonia, which I do have to admit I think is a silly name but my mind is clearly enough to be able to put some thought into more serious topics.

Now all I have to do is get caught up on my emails which I am woefully behind on.

Remember the Yazidis

I posted about the Yazidis following the massacre they experienced, today in the Washington Post, Eugene Robinson, asks that we Remember the Yazidis. A selection of some of his thoughts:

The who? Before Tuesday, you almost certainly would have asked that question -- before two villages in northern Iraq, populated by an obscure religious sect, suffered what is now officially the deadliest terrorist attack of the war, with more than 400 people confirmed dead. The final toll is expected to rise, but the coordinated suicide truck bombings in the Yazidi towns already constitute the second-worst terrorist attack of modern times, trailing only the carnage of Sept. 11, 2001.

I tend to agree with Mr. Robinson that the US government automatically assumes it was al-Qaeda and given the small numbers of the Yazidis it seems to be more religiously motivated than politically related. Unless of course al-Qaeda was using what they did to the Yazidis as an example of what they are capable of...

If this is a grand victory in the war on terror...

In following up in reading more information on the Padilla verdict, I came across this line, If this is a grand victory in the war on terror, I do not look forward to seeing what a defeat looks like..

I can't claim to understand what happened yesterday when the jury decided that Jose Padilla was guilty of all three charges. I was not there for the three months of evidence, but some of the statements made in this post by Andrew Cohen raise some questions:

For the defense, it's further proof that if you can convince an American jury that a man in the dock had anything to do with al-Qaeda, you can pretty much bank on a conviction no matter how tenuous the evidence.

Following a bitter, complicated trial that lasted three full months, it took jurors less than a day and a half of deliberations -- they made sure to stay for their free lunch on the second day -- to declare to their government and to the world that the men were terrorist-wannabes. The defendants illegally walked and talked like terrorists back in the 1990s, the jury decided today, and even though that was long before any of the rest of us had heard of Osama bin Laden or al-Qaeda, and even though there was a paucity of good evidence, it was enough.

Many of us have suggested our current jury system is broken, part of this because we do Monday Morning quarterback trials at times without knowing all of the details and at times because our jury system doesn't work the way it should. I can't say which is the truth when it comes to Padilla except to know that some of things that happened to him are not how our justice system is supposed to work:

For nearly two years, Jose Padilla was denied all access to his lawyers, his family and the court system...

As court filings indicate, Padilla was allegedly subjected to sleep deprivation, stress positions and extreme temperatures. Worse, he was held without human contact, without a clock or even natural light -- with no way to know how quickly or slowly time was passing. When he was removed from his cell to visit a dentist, goggles and earmuffs were placed on him.

Save when it comes to Ebay selling tools

I know people who have made a nice side income from selling things on Ebay, or other auction type sites. My involvement with sites like that has been from a purely buyer standpoint. However, I understand there are tips, tricks and all kinds of other tools that sellers can use, if you take a look at this website,
The Auction Software Review, you'll see various types of software that is being reviewed related to online sales such as auctions and other forms of marketing. I had no idea there was that many types of software and tools for this purpose.

One particular article that I found especially entertaining that I recommend reading is titled, Don't pay for eBay selling tools! I really enjoyed Sam Carson's tale of how he sold seven garden gnomes, though I do disagree with him as to them being "awful looking", I'm a fan of gnomes though. Anyway, back to the main topic, if you are one of those who sell on Ebay, use the tips featured to make your sales more successful and to reach the highest amount of sellers possible.

Fantasy Football season approaches!

I didn't play last year and I missed the ups, the downs, the excitement, the frustration...but thanks to Steve over at the Aging Hipster looks like I'll once again be enjoying some Fantasy Football.

*Woot* moment...

Padilla verdict expected to be announced...

It's being reported that the Padilla verdict is going to be announced today at 2:00 p.m.

Jose Padilla, Adham Amin Hassoun and Kifah Wael Jayyousi face possible sentences of life in prison if convicted of all three charges in the case, the jury only deliberated a day and a half after a three month long trial, so I'm not sure what type of message that transmits.

However, we will find out in about 20 minutes...

They found him guilty, I'm guessing that perhaps his defense team should have actually presented a...defense? I predict an appeal...

PokerLogic makes sense...

It's hard when watching some of the high stake poker games on television to not dream about the what if's as far as if I were an expert at the game of poker the thrill and the excitement of playing and winning such high stakes. Yet it is possible to have fun when playing poker even if you don't play for money, which is why if you are a poker player you should take advantage of Poker room reviews.

PokerLogic is designed for all levels of players, in a way that can provide help for those of us who still consider ourselves beginners. Personally, I really like their poker dictionary, I think it's a huge help to those just starting off who might not know the terminology and there is nothing worse than automatically announcing yourself as a newbie by not knowing what something like the "ante" is.

If you are a more advanced player, the website can also be helpful for you, providing tools on how to track your game history and to learn which rooms over the best promotions. For those of you who take your poker seriously enough to play tournaments, there are even many helpful poker tournament tips that could help you keep uping the ante to win big...

250 reported dead most deadliest attack in Iraq since 2003

In what has been described as a coordinated attack, against members of a small religious sect, the Yazidis, in northern Iraq, four huge bombs went off.

The nearly simultaneous explosions, in three Yazidi communities near the town of Sinjar, added up to the single deadliest attack in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. Hundreds of wounded people were flown or driven to hospitals, overwhelming every emergency room in the region, according to George Shlimon, vice mayor of the nearby city of Dahuk.

The Yazidis are described by the Washington Post as:

The Yazidis are an ancient group whose faith combines elements of many historical religions of the region. They worship a peacock archangel and are considered Satanists by some Muslims and Christians in Iraq, a characterization they reject.

In wikipedia there is more information on their religious beliefs.

One Strike, You're Ours?

Mitt Romney is getting some media attention on his One Strike, You're Ours?.

This includes, proposed increased punishment for those who prey on children online stringent mandatory prison sentences, followed by lifetime tracking by Global Positioning System for first-time offenders who "use the Internet to sexually assault children."

While there are states that are making the punishment more severe for these types of crimes against children Mitt is taking it to a whole new level which as the Washington Post article points out us what those like radio talk show host Glenn Beck have promoted. The article also points out civil liberties groups are very against this, but one question that I have not seen asked or answered would be exactly how would Mr. Romney propose that this be paid for?

Dreamed of having a home-based business?

There are thousands of affiliate programs out there where people are using the power of the internet to create successful home based businesses. I've checked into a few but what stopped me was the amount of time I thought it would take to be able to get such a business and a website off the ground. I felt my political blogging which is very time consuming but done out of love not money would suffer. It appears I could be very wrong on that aspect after visiting World Market Systems.

What's interesting about World Market Systems is they offer a variation of services from the basics of providing you with a website designed to make you look like one of the big fishes rather than one of the small minnows, to a more full service program that even includes coaching. This type of a service would enable those who were either not tech savvy or did not have as much time to invest in seeking out individual advertisers to still take advantage of the affiliate marketing programs out there.

WorldMarketSystems has been in business since 2002 and during that time period they state over 50,000 people have turned to them for help in creating a web presence as well as starting and operating a home-based business. If you like me, have considered wanting to be able to earn an income from the internet and affiliate marketing programs, I recommend learning more about WorldMarketSystems by visiting their website.

I tend to agree with Michelle Obama

I think the whole debate on Barack Obama and is he black enough is just as silly and as racially motivated as those who state they wouldn't vote for him because he is black. It's just as silly as people who say they would not vote for someone who is gay, or a woman or any other motivation than what the actual candidate is about.

I also do know though, that if a white candidate made the same joke about being late in reference to the black race, that people wouldn't be laughing. The problem for Barack is going to be if he makes race an issue, appealing both sides rather than to just embrace the fact and campaign on no matter our race we are all Americans...

I recommend you watch the video that's included with the article...

Why I am looking at web design services...

While I like to consider myself someone tech savvy, I realize my limits and for me trying to update and re-design my local personal website and blog has been a challenge. This has made me start looking at companies like Dev3 - Web Design Services. I really enjoyed looking at their portfolio, it really demonstrated to me their level of expertise and creativity, especially the websites they designed for "The Edge" and for Block Island.

The prices Dev3.ro lists are very reasonable as far as starting at prices and after spending quite a bit of time visiting their latest works and all of the sites included in their portfolio, I'm going to take advantage of their free quote by email to see what they could do for my website. They also provide other services even Custom Web Applications, so I recommend checking them out.

Mitt Romney wins Iowa poll but..

This is not to diss the Mitt Romney campaign, to be honest if it came down to my having to make a choice between Giuliani and him, I'd pick Romeny but, as the headlines read Romney Wins Iowa's GOP Poll, the reality is that Giuliani, Sen. John McCain and former senator Fred D. Thompson were not even in the poll. Romney only won against the others, and lets' be honest, how many of you can off the top of your head name any of them besides Ron Paul or Mike Huckabee? I had to stop and think...

Draft brought up again...

Once again, we have the idea of a military draft being brought up - this time by the President Bush's new war adviser, Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute who shares some interesting information:

"And I can tell you, this has always been an option on the table. But ultimately, this is a policy matter between meeting the demands for the nation's security by one means or another," said Lute, who is sometimes referred to as the "Iraq war czar." It was his first interview since he was confirmed by the Senate in June.

Yet it appears very clear that while this is supposedly "on the table", the President isn't ready to embrace this dish:

"The president's position is that the all-volunteer military meets the needs of the country and there is no discussion of a draft.

Yet I'm willing to bet in the next few days we will see posts stating that the President is planning on pushing a draft and political posturing about it.

Fan of Scuba?

I know a few of you who are readers of the blog are interested in scuba diving, so this website, scubish.com Scuba Diving might very well be one that you have not yet seen and could be a great resource for tips as well as reviews of some of the hottest diving spots in the World. The site provides more than just dive information, each location also has information from dive shops to what some of the favorite foods featured in that area are. There are also reviews from those who dive as to places they recommend to use and places not recommended. The find a buddy feature looks as if it is really starting to take off as well.

Cashing in on parental fear...

This one should come as no surprise, for $175.00 you can buy your child a bulletproof backpack. Supposedly it's designed to keep kids safe by hiding the bulletproof material inside the backpack. However, it's obvious that if other manufacturer's take heed of this then would be school shooters will as well, thus it's really debatable how much protection this would offer. It will however probably make a profit for the two fathers...

Light up the night

Now that I'm going to be moving my "blogging office" back up stairs since my living room needs to serve double duty as an extra bedroom, it's obvious I'm going to need more lighting. My husband has our bedroom like a cave if the main light is not on and that would be too bright for my late night blogging adventures...

:-)

Popsicle stick projects...

I've been on a popsicle craze here lately which has made me think about the days when my children were younger and they would want to make a trip to the hobby shop to build all kinds of things from popsicle stick houses to sea monkeys and growing their own crystals. Or spending time making their own jewelry from the rock polisher that they loved messing around with, I still have some of the things they made for me during those days.

My son and Air Jordans

In my semi walking down memory lane for products, I remember when the very first Air Jordans came out and my son was convinced that his life would end as he knew it if he did not have a pair of Air Jordans. I was a single parent at the time, but my father even though he couldn't understand the appeal did make my son's shoe dreams come true.

Price still the same for Globe insurance...

Even before the days of the internet, Globe Life insurance offered the first month at one dollar for their life insurance no medical exam plans. It's ironically one of the longest running marketing campaigns that I can think of where the price has not gone up.

Is it better to slow down or to buy a radar detector...

One of my daughters makes frequent trips up into Michigan and a friend was trying to tell her that she should look at radar detector reviews and purchase one so that she could get there faster. Sometimes it is fairly easy to guess who on the highway with you actually has a radar detector, or the ones who don't care if they run into a speed trap...

:-)

Bards in Branson...

The below post got me thinking about Bards which I know many of the people who travel to Branson Missouri do so for the music. My aunt and uncle make twice yearly trips to Branson, because they are huge fans of country music and the flea markets there. For them it's the atmosphere that keeps bringing them back year after year.

Bard of Bushworld Denounced

Interesting title selected as the "gotcha" one on the main page of the Washington Post website, which then leads to the text of the article that is titled, Bush's Muse Stands Accused. I'd guess someone was really into trying to be the Muselike Bard of the WaPo with that adventure.

The text of the article brings into question did Michael J. Gerson really come up with some of the sound bites that he's been credited with or was it someone else:

According to Matthew Scully, who worked with him for five years, Gerson is not the bard of Bushworld but rather a "self-publicizing" glory hog guilty of "foolish vanity," "sheer pettiness" and "credit hounding." In Scully's account, Gerson did not come up with the language that made him famous. "Few lines of note were written by Mike," Scully says, "and none at all that come to mind from the post-9/11 addresses -- not even 'axis of evil.' "

You could ask yourself does it really matter who wrote what? It appears to some it does.

My Alzheimer's Experience and how you can help...

There are several organizations that I have given my time, money and blogspace to that I think are worthy as a Charitable Cause. One that I have not helped to support in the past but am now is the Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk. This organization has existed since 1989 and they have raised over $225 million dollars in that time frame. They do want to do more and that's where blogging about this as well as giving you information on how you can be a walker or be a Team Captain comes in. I was happy to see that Toledo was listed on the website, the walk starts at the Toledo Zoo and will be held on Sunday, September 23, 2007. If any of you are interested in forming a team here in T-Town let me know and I'll be happy to get the ball rolling.

My grandmother had Alzheimer's and it was a sad journey for our family to watch her go from the vibrant woman who was the President of the Toledo Area Bowling Association to a shell of a woman who did not remember any of us. Long after she stopped remembering who I was and thought I was just someone who worked at the skilled living facility she was placed into, I'd visit to make sure her candy dish was filled with her favorites, it was my way of acknowledging that even though she didn't remember me, I remembered her. So for me, it's a very personal reason that I urge you to consider supporting the Alzheimer's Association and I hope you join me...

Differing opinions on border patrol goals...

Recommended article over at the Washington Times on the differing opinion as to can the goal of hiring 6000 new Border Patrol agents in the time line that the President has requested. The man the President hired for the job:

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner W. Ralph Basham said that while increasing the agency"s manpower by 50 percent has been a major challenge, an aggressive recruiting drive has been successful and major revisions in training have streamlined the process while maintaining its quality.

Mr. Basham said the agency is "on track" to meet the goal helped, in part, by a training regime that includes a revamped schedule, a reduction in training days and a modernized Spanish-language program.

The man who represents Former Border Patrol agents:

But Kent Lundgren, coordinator of the 800-member National Association of Former Border Patrol Officers, said the massive recruiting goal and quality training are not compatible.

"It can"t be done and still turn out functional, effective Border Patrol agents," Mr. Lundgren said. "It may be possible to run trainees in one door and out the other. But train them well? No."

I think Kent probably has a valid point, it reminds me of when the government tried to replace huge numbers of air traffic controllers after they were fired during their strike. It didn't go well...

We love quizzes on LCS...but

During the years I've been blogging here on LCS, we've had fun with quite a few quizzes, some like the The Impossible Quiz which is really impossible because there is no way to find out what the score is without signing up for one offer which I did not want to do. Unfortunately that is the downside to QuizRocket, if you don't mind signing up for at least one offer after you go through several ad screens you can skip, there is no way to get the scores.

Still they get a Lisa Renee kudo for having fun quizzes, just not for making you jump through that many ad hoops to be able to get a response, especially when at the very last screen you discover that there is no option to skip...

(I am 18/18 dumb for taking that many quizzes to see if they all ended up the same - but it still was fun)

Does the US have a moral obligation to Iraqi's they've hired?

That is the basic nature of the situation as raised in this CNN story, Iraqi interpreter: 'Now I have no future'. Given the problems in Iraq the only way for the US to really fulfill the moral obligation that is being said by some to exist would be to bring every single family who supported or helped the US to the United States. Making arrangements for only 1000 of the interpreters is not a solution as many people will be left behind and if the government there is such that these people are living in the fear they are reporting? How have we really even made Iraq any better? It seems the only difference is who are the people that are living in fear rather than Iraq being a better nation than it was before.

Removing those who did support/help the US is not going to make Iraq a better country, as those who are left behind will feel abandoned if they were supporters and those very people who could have stayed to make a difference to make Iraq a better nation leaving just leaves more there who create the fear rather than fight it.

Driving Smart Minds

The title of this post is a play on Isuzu's "Smart Minds Drive Alike" campaign, the purpose of this post is to take a look at the isuzu pickup. I've had many different vehicles during the days when I used to drive, and among those years ago was a Isuzu owned by my ex-husband. So while I have not had the opportunity to drive any of the newer line, including the crew cab, I do know that that truck took quite a bit of use and at times abuse and kept driving. One of his favorite things to do was to drive out through the fields where his family lived up in Michigan, going "mudding". His truck was one of the few that never got stuck and more than one time pulled out other daredevils.

Pick up trucks are of course not supposed to be "pretty" but the whole Isuzu line is an attractive one, especially the Ascender SUV. The 7 year 75,000 mile warranty is an added bonus and I like the comparison feature on the Isuzu website. It's available for the Ascender, the i370 and the i290. Personally I would have been happier had my husband decided to get the extended cab i290 rather than the 5 passenger Chevy he bought, having the ability to haul items as we frequently end up doing with the way my daughters move in and out of our home would have been a plus.

Amar and another interesting Global Post...

As I've written before, I've been following the writings and adventures of Amar C. Bakshi in the PostGlobal series on the Washington Post. Yesterday Amar posted another experience that I recommend as a thought provoking look into how others see the United States this time from Pakistan. It's entitled, American Arrogance -- Or Just Self-Awareness?.

It's a question I have asked myself at times as far as how many US Citizens are more self absorbed with their own self importance rather than taking a larger view. We've discussed here more than once the fact that we place a much higher value on American lives than we do of those of other nations, especially those in the Middle East.

What I found especially interesting was that the knowledge that this self-centered behavior exists in other nations, it just appears that we as Americans seem to get quite a bit more focus on that trait. I think it would be hard to argue it is not in part due to our own behaviors as well as how we are portrayed by the media in other countries.

Writing the Book

It seems if you want to run for president you have to have a book. As I read the Washington Post article, about all of the presidential candidates who have written books recently or dusted off an old one to recycle as new, I wondered...I've written a book, so I wonder if an obscure book on Ohio History and my adventures in trying to find out information on my father's family would count.

I guess in the end for some of these presidential wannabee's if they don't make it as president perhaps their book sale profits have been enhanced...

What is a Thoof?

As I wondered what exactly is a "Thoof" and what could "Thoofing" possibly be, I first thought perhaps it was some type of mythical monster as pictured here. Something that big could call itself whatever it wanted, seriously who's going to complain.

Then I wondered, was some poor soul stuttering trying to sing the chorus of "the roof, the roof, the roof is on fire"? That could sound like a "thoof", but that doesn't explain what "thoofing" might be, unless it was jumping off of a roof...Which I don't think would appeal to many of us except for the few daredevils out there among us.

My flights of fancy ended when I discovered that Thoof is a personalized news service, where you can decide what news you are looking for or even submit stories of your own and Thoof takes care of it for you, yes, that would mean you would be "thoofing" your news. When you visit thoof.com you'll see articles that have been submitted and there is a really nice screencast to watch if you want to learn how to really be a "thoofer".

There is a ranking aspect to Thoof called of course the ThoofRank Badge, but it appears how that happens is at this point a secret locked deep in the heart of Thoofdom...Seriously, it is something that's set to be released soon from what I understand and it could add a whole new aspect to those who love to...Thoof...

John Edwards is not Howard Dean...

I like John Edwards, and I also like Howard Dean, I would have voted for Howard Dean had he not dropped out of the primary before he got to Ohio. That said, I found this description from the debate last night to be one I had mixed emotions on:

Third, John Edwards is fast becoming the Howard Dean of this race. That's been apparent almost from the start of the year, but with each week it is more obvious. He has toughened his rhetoric and has sought to turn himself into the outsider candidate determined not just to battle for the nomination but to make reforming the Democratic Party a part of his message. All were elements of Dean's campaign four years ago.

I don't know where Dan Balz's been since John Edwards announced he was running for President but what he's seeing now has been what Edwards has done for quite some time. I guess the good news is Dan's on board now as far as realizing that most of us realize Edwards' advantage is he is an outsider...

There are also six more points that Dan Balz makes from the debate you might find of interest.

:-)

Talking Teak...

It's really almost too hot to do much of anything today except sit outside and hope for a nice cool breeze or a thunderstorm to pass through. Which leads me to thinking about how nice it would be to add some teak furniture to our back deck area. On days like today with the extra family members staying here in the hot house, it'd be not only nice to have a few more comfortable places to sit, but one of the advantages of teak patio furniture is it's easy to maintain, you don't have to worry about paint or stain or any other refinishing. While our current set was very inexpensive it's not very hardy and some simple child play type antics that is a normal part of this household at times has already taken out one piece of outdoor furniture. For some reason a three legged deck chair just doesn't do the trick...

Realistically with the way they are so hard on furniture in this house, and with as nice as some of the designs are, I should consider teak outdoor furniture for inside my house as well...

Map shows where US is getting bigger...

Not bigger as far as more people but bigger as far as weight, it's an interesting map that changes to show you which parts of the US has residents who have a growing waistline. Obesity Map is worth taking a look at.

Dan Moldea in action again...

I'm not sure if Dan Moldea really does only do this because it's on principle, but regardless of his reasoning, he has made many a politician which that he never existed. The Washington Post has an interesting article about the Morals of a Muckraker

One month after rekindling their partnership, Moldea learned that Sen. David Vitter's number had been found in the phone records of the escort service run by the alleged D.C. Madam, Deborah Jeane Palfrey. This was no coincidence, as Moldea had just agreed to write a book with Palfrey. He promptly leaked the Vitter calls to Time. And when the Louisiana Republican preempted the magazine by apologizing for having sinned, Moldea made sure Flynt got credit by leaking word of his role to ABC News.

While it's said he's not doing it for the money, not many people would refuse a million dollar reward...

This made me wish I lived in the UK...

We are dealing with major home repair issues due to an absent landlord so reading about Anglian Home Improvements and seeing the type of work they can do in creating Conservatories, made me long to be transported to UK with our current house, and then *poof* be transported back.

However, since that's not possible? I recommend those of you who live in an area where you can make use of their services, do so and if you want to gloat you can send me pictures that I can be envious over...Angilian Home Improvements has been a trusted name in the Home improvements business for over thirty-six years, when you visit their website you get a good hint into why...

Bloggers to unionize?

A very good friend sent me the title link that talks about some bloggers of the left, mainly the kos bunch discussing the idea of bloggers unionizing.

After my main, ICK!

The second ICK's came in, but I think some of others quoted in the article say it even better than I could:

"The reason I like blogging is that it's very anarchistic. I can do whatever I want whenever I want, and oh my God, you're not going to tell me what to do," said Curt Hopkins, the founder of the Committee to Protect Bloggers.

Nor am I ever ever ever going to pay union dues to blog...

:-)

Darn lungs get in the way of blogging...

I've been behind once again because of a diagnosis of pleurisy which has me feeling a bit out of it. Okay, a bit out of more than normal (smile). Then the extra issues with the visit from the brother-in-law who left this morning back to Puerto Rico and an additional daughter moving back home.

Then of course politically things here in Toledo have been still crazy, almost a full time job alone on some days.

Hence my update as to why I am a bad blogger....

eCards and more from BoldLoft...

In addition to some cute products BoldLoft also offers some cute eCard designs that you might want to take a look at the next time you decide to send some email love to friends or family. I really like the one that says "Just wanna say I love you". My youngest daughter is a huge fan of red and black and has the pillow case set with a man and a woman on her wish list since she is planning a room design change having outgrown her princess pink bedroom and wants something more "fun" and "grown up". They also have a nice selection of body pillowcases...

Funky Photo Hunt...

The picture isn't the greatest of quality it was almost dusk, but you can see what a funky car this is that we saw at a party we attended not to long ago. The whole car is covered with flowers, toys, old CD's and much more...Funky...

Have you seen these digital picture frames?

I have to admit until the other day I had no idea what a digital picture frame was, I was happy just to be able to have a new computer that could burn slide shows on a DVD to be able to share with people. Yet with the technology behind the digital photo frame you take the memory card from your camera and insert it into the frame, this creates an instant slide show of photos where ever the frame is.

When you want to change pictures, it's as easy as changing the card, which would mean those walls full of family photos that you have to change every time there is a new picture would be obsolete, with a digital frame, you just change the card. While you could of course save the previous pictures on your computer or print them out later, the possibilities of what can be done with one of these digital picture frames is endless. For me I instantly thought of my brother in law who has been visiting with us but does not have a computer, with one of these frames he'd have all of the pictures taken here to be able to share without having to have everyone gather around the DVD player.

Popular promotional items...

Of all of the things I am given by candidates, causes, companies, I have to say my favorite still is personalized pens. I do have a collection of political stickers that adorn my older computer but I also have been collecting note pads and pens from campaigns. Who knows, maybe some day one of our local candidates will run for some big federal office and they'll be collector's items.

:-)

Oh for a breeze....

While I remind myself that for a good part of our history air conditioning did not exist and that our forefathers did manage to survive without it, living in a house that does not have air nor can have window air conditioning on days like today can be a challenge. It makes it worse if you spend time looking at things like like beaufort nc real estate, where every home seems to have central air...

:-)

Kid Nation...are you kidding me?

I'm a fan of some reality tv shows, like Big Brother and Survivor, but upon learning that CBS was going to have a show called "Kid Nation" where children are supposedly left to fend for themselves in an abandoned town in New Mexico...My first thought was...

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!

What kind of money hungry attention starving ditzy parent would allow their child to live under those kinds of conditions and what hare brained people at CBS actually thought up this one?

These are not exactly almost adults - the children are aged 8 to 15. This should be considered child abuse and I plan to contact every single advertiser for this junk that it's not appropriate to use kids in this way. No, I won't be watching, seeing the preview was more than enough for me to see that even in the reality tv world which is at times of questionable taste, this one takes the cake.

Learning more about colloidal silver

Not to long ago when I was searching for information on how to fight a tooth abscess, I came across a few websites that had information on colloidal metals and the health benefits that some believe products like colloidal silver provide to those who use it. I then started searching a bit more to understand more and I learned that some formations of colloidal silver are better for topical application or if in a product that can be inhaled. Yet other forms of colloidal silver, like Mesosilver are designed to give a higher concentration of smaller silver particles and are said this gives them a higher variation of product use. Mesosilver can be used for the topical application or nebulized for an inhaler but can also be ingested orally and is considered more effective.

I have not tried either form of colloidal silver, so I can not tell you if it worked for me or not, but I do know that many people feel it has benefited them and that there is quite a bit of information and research out there on this topic if you want to learn even more.

Sunni Arabs quit Iraqi government...

Just the other day it was being reported that things were getting better in Iraq, yet today in what should be a larger news story but is buried...Sunni Arab Bloc Quits Iraqi Government:

Rafaa al-Issawi, a leading member of the Front, said at a news conference that the bloc's six Cabinet ministers would submit their resignations later in the day.

Al-Issawi said the decision to pull out from the government followed what he called Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki's failure to respond to the Accordance Front. It gave him seven days to meet its demands, and the ultimatum expired Wednesday.

This is of course the same Iraqi government that faced recent criticism for taking the whole month off because it was too hot in Baghdad.

I checked other news sources to see where this was listed...CNN had nothing...Fox had nothing...AP had it as a breaking news which is most likely where the Washington Post got it from.

Print media losing advertising...

Recently there were several media reports on the topic of the print media facing a reduction in profit because it's becoming more common for a real estate broker to advertise on the internet and to promote their websites and weblistings of homes as opposed to running ads in a newspaper. The days of the huge Sunday real estate section could be ending as more home buyers discover their perfect home through the internet.

The joy of plumbing...

Our bathroom is above our kitchen, and thanks to impatient people who felt it necessary to take a shower knowing that the tub was clogged, I now have a wet drywall ceiling mess due to not just the clog but obviously an issue with the bath tub drain leaking. This makes me very thankful that I don't have one of the range hoods that I had wanted since the area the water is leaking from is almost directly under the stove...
