Edwards could not resist the power trip..

That's basically what it boils down to:
“It is inadequate to say to the people who believed in me that I am sorry, as it is inadequate to say to the people who love me that I am sorry. In the course of several campaigns, I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic. If you want to beat me up - feel free. You cannot beat me up more than I have already beaten up myself. I have been stripped bare and will now work with everything I have to help my family and others who need my help.”

I think many would say we are seeing, "I started to believe that I was special and became increasingly egocentric and narcissistic" with another presidential candidate, and it happens with many of them. When they start to believe their own bs, we have a problem.

Presidents who had extramarital affairs either in office out of office: (ones we know of anyway):

* Thomas Jefferson
* James Garfield
* Warren Harding
* Franklin Roosevelt
* John Kennedy
* Lyndon Johnson
* Bill Clinton
* Ronald Reagan

Trying to keep track of how many other elected officials have admitted they had affairs would be time consuming. Just google "admits extramarital affair" and once you get past the page of the recent news attributed to John Edwards, you'll see for yourself...

For those wondering what Elizabeth Edwards has to say? It's here.

Sorry - giving him a pass "because so many others do it too" doesn't cut it any more. These guys just prove over and over how little they respect others. They are not public servants - hard to believe that they ever were.

The final indignity will be when the Breck Girl finds out that his hot little honey was bought and paid for by the Clinton camp. Who here would be surprised when that little fact comes to light.

I'm guessing then that McCain having an affair would create a scenario where he should not get a pass either then?

My point is not that he should get a pass but that some of them do succumb to the ego trip of thinking that their power gives them the right to be above the preferred behavior we'd like to see demonstrated by a candidate.

Considering the affair happened in 2006, if the Clinton camp had something to do with creating the affair? They were certainly planning ahead and no matter what, the ultimate decision to be unfaithful lies with John Edwards.

Exactly - no "free passes" anywhere around on this. I'm not much of a McCain supporter either - serious lack of any good choices where the leadership of our country is concerned...

Being so close to the 40th anniversary of Humanae Vitae's publication I could say that this sort of behavior was predicted long ago - but not too many people want to hear that.... The problem has been around since antiquity - we just keep trying and trying to make it "no big deal" anymore.

Regarding the Clinton's - I don't get surprised by anything that they do. This just seems to fit the profile somewhat. Somewhere Bill/Hil are sitting around smiling smugly tonight :-). May not be true - but it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

I fail to understand.

When I was growing up in the 1950s the message to Catholics was"
"You have the kids - we will educate them free>"

Tuition at the parish school is around $2000.

Tuition in Catholc high schools in Cincinnati is about $6500 to about $10,000.

In 1960 I paid $50 tuition at a Catholic high school - the parish paid the other $50.

The church has no business being in the birth control business.

If I had eight kids - because of accepting the Church's posiition on birth control - I WOULD EXPECT THE CHURCH TO EDUCATE MY KIDS FREE.

Sorry for the ot.

The only people in power who get forgiveness are the ones who just cheat on their spouses in a hetrosexaul way. If an affair happens and it happens to be a homosexual nature then the people demand that the person in power be deposed that instant.

I understand that if a person cheats on a spouse that person won't automaticly betray the position he/she may be in. But it doesn't mean that we should just say so what and let that be the end of it. A broken vow is a broken promise of a truly high order and the one who breaks it must be suspect in future dealings for a long time before that person could be truly trusted by others again. Maybe it is ego that makes the poeple of power feel that they can do anything without consenqunce, but let us remeber that pride comes before a fall. Maybe these people should be more careful before they commit adultery. Doesn't mean that they sould go unmarked.

As for Edwards' wife, I agree with her that it is a private matter. Maybe I'm jaded on this, but I don't think that she is staying in the marriage for love or the kids. It's the lifestyle she wants to keep. She is part of the ultimate "in" crowd in the US. That is why Hillary stayed with Bill after all the affairs on the way to and in the White House, in my opinion. She would have shown a stronger display of strength if she left him back in 2006 and start over than stay. It's easy to leave a spouse when the money is lacking, but it takes true will to leave when the money is flowing and the lifestyle is more that can be imagine.

That's true C, I know what it's like to be married to an unfaithful spouse, in my situation I was not forgiving. Well, I was the first time but when it came to the second time? It was financially difficult but to me, worth it.

Yet, I wasn't living the type of lifestyle Elizabeth Edwards does either. It's easy to try to justify in your mind that it's worth staying together for the kids, but the reality is if you really can't move forward from an affair? It's better to end the marriage.

It bothers me even more that his wife is dying of cancer.

I was irritated by the Nightline interview. How dare he try to make excuses for his unacceptable behavior. I just wanted to backhand him. The interview just made him appear creepy.
