Feud over parking tickets turns deadly...

Five dead after gunman opens fire at Kirkwood City Hall. Disturbing story from Missouri:

9:12 p.m.

News 4 Sports' Doug Vaughn was a long time friend of the gunman, and says that "he was great guy," but he did have a long time feud with the City of Kirkwood over parking citations.

9:12 p.m.

The Post Dispatch reporter at the scene said the gunman walked into City Hall and shouted "shoot the mayor first." Officials apparently threw chairs at the gunman to stop him from shooting, but the gunman continued to shoot at city officials.

9:06 p.m.

A friend of the shooter says the "writing was on the wall, and that It was just a matter of time. Charles Lee Thornton had a long feud apparently with the City of Kirkwood over parking citations.

9:02 p.m.

The gunman has been shot and killed.

8:57 p.m.

News 4 reports court records show a possible motive in the case. Thornton received several citations, and felt this was a violation of his rights and made several appeals. The court records go back all the way to 2005.

8:53 p.m

A Post-Dispatch reporter that was at the meeting reports that at least five were shot. Public officials and attorneys are among the dead.

I didn't realize that race was even a factor in any of this until I read the news reports this morning that mentioned:

He wasn't going to be "treated like a slave," a friend said.

That said, it's not really clear how much race played a part in this but it does sound as if his dispute with the city had existed for several years.
