She thought she was a citizen but was not...
I guess in a way it's kind of easy to understand if you believe that your parents did the paperwork to make you a US Citizen though I think you would wonder where that paperwork was or at least want to see it at some point in time along with your birth certificate and other information. Yet Zoila Meyer not only faces deportation but criminal charges for voting illegally since she was not really a US citizen when she voted.

Before I begin, I apologize in advance for any revulsion caused by the drivel I feel compelled to compose in response to such 'patriotic' brilliance by our courageous public servants. Upon reading about this gleaming nugget in the news, I knew I had to speak my peace. I could only remark that this is one of the finest examples of pure unmitigated horse droppings I've seen to date. A rather simple - if unforgivably logical - thought comes to mind: If this was a real issue, then where was the INS for the last x years? Why would they decide now would be a good time to do their job? Of course, no act of crack immigration enforcement would be complete w/out the oh-so-timely yet completely coincidental, non-political and totally unrelated choice of when to enforce the 'rules'. Was it soon after her arrival a-la-Elian Gonazales? Or after her first 'illicit' vote? Or after a few votes? No, that would make too much sense! The obvious 'right time' to apprehend this 'serial villain' was only after she has not only has voted for years (something that seems to slip the minds of about 2/3rds of the 'legal' population), but actually participates in the electoral process. I guess they had to have undeniable proof that this dreaded foe was an absolute threat to the American Dream, American Flag, American Way and the PTA. Thank goodness they caught up with her before - heaven forbid - she got a Library Card! Nobody would be safe then! Given the ludicrous times in which I appear to live, I suppose I should be expecting screen doors on submarines and pigs with wings .. 'nuff said! -- Humbly yours, Wylie E. Coyote.
No apologies necessary, I think if you have lived your whole life here and believed you were a citizen, did everything a US citizen does, that your point about why wasn't this caught sooner is very valid.
I also think after living here after all of these years not trying to be an illegal immigrant someone shouldn't be treated as a criminal. I also can't help wondering why this wasn't caught when she applied for a social security number since you have to have one to pay taxes and more...
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Thanks for your kind words. I'm afraid that from time to time I'm forced question how 'common' sense can be. Having read a few of your entries so far, I'd say you serve as at least one example. Would there were more such souls where matters as this are concerned. History seems to suggest though, that while sense may not be common inanity remains boundless. No doubt like MacArthur I shall return - when I need to be reminded the entire world has not 'truly gone fishing'....Thanks again!
Zoila Meyer said, "If they can do this to me, they can do it to anybody."
But that's not the truth of it. Had she lived her life without seeking to represent others, she probably would never have found out that she was not a citizen. This story demonstrates that the immigration rules hurt those who try to follow the rules much more than they hurt those who don't.
We need real solutions and real enforcement.
