I can't help wondering why we as tax payers should have to provide Secret Service protection to presidential candidates anyway, especially this early in the process. I can understand Clinton since it is traditional for a former president and his family to receive Secret Service protection but when reading the Washington Post that because Secret Service has to "protect" the numerous presidential candidates they were going to have to borrow more than 2,000 immigration officers and federal airport screeners next year made me cringe. Why should our safety and the already lack of needed immigration officers be put on hold when the majority of these presidential candidates have more than enough money to provide their own security services.
I suggest similar to many other federal programs that there be an income level test and if you or your campaign has above a certain dollar amount you then are responsible for your own security services costs.

I think the campaigns should pay for it all during the primary process and most of it during the general election. I also think that Air Force One should not be used for campaign trips without the campaigns reimbursing the government. And that includes the president stopping to give a 5 minute speech on education to count it as an official trip and then going to a $1000 a plate dinner
Yes, the campaigns are tossing around hundreds of Million$ of dollar$ in advertising, THEY should provide their own security and we should only provide oversight and intelligence, assuming that we can find some. . .
