Platform beds have really evolved...
The downside to the design of our home is the impossibility of getting a box spring larger than a twin up the stairs, hence we have been looking at either building or buying a platform bed. While I do have the plans to make our own, in looking at one of the platform beds that club furniture has on their website, the "Connor", I fell in love with it. I really like the large upholstered headboard and it's made in the USA. I've spent hours at their website looking at the different styles and types of furniture that they offer, it's one of my favorite places to see what's new in furniture.

I couldn't get my queen size box springs upstairs when I moved into my house. After sleeping with the mattress on the floor for a month, I couldn't take it anymore. I found instructions online to figure out a way to get it upstairs. I actually cut through the slats to be able to fold the box springs in half (there's a metal rod in there, but it bends easily enough). I bound it with clothesline and carried it up the steps and around the narrow turn with no problem. Then I straightened it out and used metal plates and screws to put the slats back together.
I might have shortened the life of the bed overall, but it was a heck of a lot cheaper solution in the short run to buying something new. And I was pretty damn proud of myself for solving the problem. :)

When we had that problem, we bought twin box springs and put them together under the top matress.
But that, of course, was a new purchase...
