You! Leave our trans fats alone!

In the never ending saga of government trying to enforce on us things that should be our own decision comes this from CNN:

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Board of Health voted Tuesday to make New York the nation's first city to ban artery-clogging artificial trans fats at restaurants -- from the corner pizzeria to high-end bakeries.

The board, which passed the ban unanimously, did give restaurants a slight break by relaxing what had been considered a tight deadline for compliance. Restaurants will be barred from using most frying oils containing artificial trans fats by July and will have to eliminate the artificial trans fats from all of their foods by July 2008.

The FDA estimates the average American eats 4.7 pounds of trans fats each year.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who banned smoking in bars and restaurants during his first term, is somewhat health-obsessed, and even maintains a weight-loss competition with one of his friends in order to stay slim.

He has dismissed cries that New York is crossing a line by trying to legislate diets.

"Nobody wants to take away your french fries and hamburgers -- I love those things, too," he said recently. "But if you can make them with something that is less damaging to your health, we should do that."

Ummm no, if I want to indulge from time to time in something that tastes good to me that involves trans fat? That should be my choice. If you make them something less you are taking away taste. Seriously, if I wanted healthy I'd eat a veggie burger or a turkey burger instead. The problem is those who don't moderate their diet...

I wish Bloomberg was my friend. I need a partner in a weight loss and fitness competition to keep me motivated.

I am still mad at McDonald;s for when they switched from lard to healthier vegetable oil. I know the food is bad, but sometimes you gotta have some lard soaked fries and a burger with what could be beef.

Oh lordy, don't get me started on McD's fries since the oil change. They are N-A-A-A-A-A-S-T-Y!!!!!! I can't even eat them anymore because, if you'll excuse too much info, they go right through me. The only place in Toledo that has what I consider GOOD fries is The Wings Station on Holland-Sylvania. We get lunch from there a couple times a month at work and I LOVE their fries!

But as to whether or not "big brother" needs to make these kinds of decisions for us or not, I say NO WAY! Each person makes their own choices and when ANY type of government steps in where personal choices should be, there's simply something wrong! Whether it's the types of foods that we eat or whether or not people smoke, government is stepping into places where I personally feel it doesn't belong. Before we know it, the only choices we'll have left to make on our own will be what clothes we wear and what time to go to bed and wake up. Everything else will be government mandated for us because we've given them an inch and history shows if you give them an inch, they'll take everything else eventually.

I don't believe that I've had the opportunity to try Mickey D's fries since the change, so I cannot offer an opinion on them.

However, this "Big Brotherish" trend should be no surprise to anyone, it's been building to this for many years and it's our own damned fault.

Most Americans cannot make wise choices without the Gubmint to do it for us.
