I can't say I disagree with the frustration expressed in this Washington Post article. It is very difficult to open packaging and there is nothing more frustrating than giving a child a gift and discovering it doesn't work. We have personally resorted to opening most of these "beyond shoplift proof" items and then wrapping them in a box already opened. That way we can make sure if it is an item that needs a battery or is electrically powered that it works. Despite the claims:
Manufacturers say molded packaging protects goods on the long journey from Asia.
It may have worked in Asia but it doesn't always work after be opened under the Christmas tree...
I have to add this comment from the article:
On Amazon.com, one reviewer of the remote-controlled Roboreptile by Wow Wee singled out the toy's solitary confinement: "Getting him out of the box was a major pain. Apparently they're concerned about packs of them escaping and running amok devouring Barbies in the stores at night or something."

Lisa,
Yeah, the packaging can be annoying and it's always good to tes before wrapping, but it is almost always a good idea to take the batteries out before wrapping, to avoid any "accidental set-offs."
