Realizing if we don't care about human lives then animals are not important...

I realize that there are people in our country and in the world who are dealing with horrible situations. Not enough food, no shelter and lack of medical care. So I realize it seems strange to be upset that given we have too many people that don't value human life that we don't value the lives of animals. Yet it still upsets me.

If you read Glass City Jungle you know why I am upset. If you don't? Then you don't know that once again I have taken in a pet that was dumped by an irresponsible pet owner. My daughter Megan, who has her love of animals and her concern for animals that are hurt or abandoned by growing up with me as a mother found a dog a few days ago shaking, wet and in horrible shape under a tree. I did not want to take in this dog initially however, Megan tried her best to find someone to help her and no one would. Her father drew the line at letting the dog stay in a cage in the garage after having Megan try to find other people or places to take this dog but the garage had no heat. Given the age and the condition of the dog this alone would have killed it, so today the dog is with me.

But this isn't about my ex-husband or me who told my ex-husband today that I knew that the reason Megan cared was because of me. This is about the stupid asshat that dumped this dog or lost this dog and did nothing to try to find this dog. Yet we don't care if children in America are hungry...We don't care if children in Darfur are dying among places children are dying or starving. This is exactly what is wrong with our country today, the concept of letting someone else deal with something that should not be their responsiblity. Don't want your pet? Let someone else deal with it...Children hungry? Let someone else deal with it...Children dying in some other country? Let someone else deal with it...

Those of us who are willing to deal with it? Would really appreciate those of you who decide to let us deal with it growing some balls of your own....

UPDATE: We did find the dogs owner today. He belonged to an elderly woman and her daughter happened to spot the ad in the paper. She had let the dog out front because he had nipped at her the last time she tried to pick him up to go out in the fenced backyard and then she couldn't find him. When they couldn't find him they thought due to his age and other problems that he had gone somewhere to die. Since he had tried to bite me as well, we figured out that it was his hearing/vision issues that made him try to snap at you if he wasn't aware of your presence so, now she will know what to do to take him out back where the yard is fenced.

That is not to happen Lisa, until they grow a brain and a spine first....

Oh yes, and a conscience too.

It is a cute dog though.. I think maybe it was just too much work for someone seeing as how it is blind/deaf. I'm sure it didn't just wander off on its own.

I think we should prosecute people who abuse animals like they were abusing humans. I don't see it being too big a step from animal abuse to spousal or child abuse. Unfortunately you are right though. Nothing is anyone's problem in our country until it effects them. Then they bitch that noone was there for them.

Of course the people who do want to do something about it will never have enough power to effect real change because they will be labeled socialist or bleeding heart or some similarly ignorant title

Way to go! We have taken in a couple dogs for a night or so until we found the owner. It feels kind of good. Especially if they seem to miss the puppy. Both times we did it, someone was housesitting and let the dog out.

Did you get your gift card?
