More on School safety....

Since this has ended up being kind of a side topic here with all of the personal drama related to the EHW...today's Toledo Blade had an article about something I wondered about (and noooo none of the schools featured are "our" school):

Even with increased attention on school security this week because of recent killings at an Amish schoolhouse in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and a Colorado high school, a stranger walked unchallenged Wednesday into several Toledo-area school buildings.

In a half-dozen cases, the stranger - a Blade reporter dressed casually in a sweater and jeans - wandered around inside the schools unnoticed for more than 15 minutes.

Unlocked side or back doors enabled the reporter to walk right into Wernert Elementary School and Whitmer High School in the Washington Local School District, Cardinal Stritch and Clay high schools in Oregon, Ottawa Hills High School, and Toledo Public's Woodward High.

In contrast, exterior doors at Toledo Public's Old West End Academy and Old Orchard and Pickett elementary schools, and Toledo Catholic's Gesu school were all locked Wednesday.

The Blade reporter was able to enter Gesu through a main entrance, but was quickly stopped and questioned.

Hopefully this situation is a wake up call - I seriously doubt any parent is going to be offended if they are asked upon being seen in a school hall who they are or where are they going.

As Gomer Pyle used to say "SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE". Do they not get the point? Do we have to go through another scare like Riverside, or an actual shooting for them to realize how SERIOUS this is?
It cracked me up on the news on Channel 13 the other night how they said the door on that school was open because they were waiting for a delivery. B***$**T! Just another "hurry up and lets cover our a$$ situation!" The only "good" thing was that it wasn't just TPS schools that they found open doors in.
EVERY school district thinks it won't be them. Who in the world would have ever thought that someone would go into a friggin Amish school and do this? Not me, nor anyone else I know.
The fact is it can happen in ANY school, no matter how safe they think they are.
What about the high school that had a gun in it the other day? Tell me how that got in there?
It's got nothing to do with color, gender, social background, financial background or anything. It's the fact that today's kids are being forgotten more than any other generation! They're being pushed to the side in school AND at home. No, not all kids, myself and MANY parents that I know personally are very active in our childrens lives. But look at how many kids today don't have an active parent in their lives. It's sad! Today's economy is so that families have no choice but to have 2+ incomes just to make ends meet. And what about single parents? They end up having to work 2 jobs alone. It's not their fault, it's the way this world has changed. Everyone thingks they have to keep up with the Jones'. If Mr. Jones gets a new car, then I have to, if he builds a bigger house, then I have to, etc. It's INSANE! There is nothing left anymore for "common" people like myself and many other parents/familes I know. We can't take vacations because they're insanely over priced and even though we have "good" jobs, it's not enough to be able to put away. We get laughed at or pointed at because our cars are a little "dingy" or aren't newer, BUT, we don't have an insanely high car payment either. I'm sorry, I'm damn PROUD of my jalopy! It runs awesome, gets 35+ MPG and I've beat MANY nice cars when that light turns green because they think my crappy little car is a P.O.S.
Society as a whole needs to stop looking outward and start looking inward. Things might be nice, but you can't take them with you, and they can be gone in a heart beat!
Sorry, didn't mean to go on and on here.
Luv ya lady!

Lisa,
You had better not risk any cash to back that statement up with, you would surely lose on this one.

I can think of at least a half dozen schools where wandering parents would become instantly offended, indignant, and highly vocal if they were challenged.

And, that would only be the beginning. . .

Nuff said ;-)

I am pretty sure that most of the doors were unlocked when I was in grade and middle school. Even my high school only locked doors in halls where you could get directly to classrooms. That was so we couldn't leave school and try to sneak back in though.

I think the problem with a lot of schools is the same problem we have in a lot of areas. Everyone thinks it can't happen to them and don't take it seriously until it does.
