It seemed like a simple decision, I had once been really involved in Parents club to the point of getting overwhelmed so when I found out Aubrey's teacher needed a parent volunteer for their library day? Sounded like something I could do to help and avoid the drama that seems to follow most Parents club organizations. I know computers, I love books, this sounded easy!
I knew things were not looking good when I showed up for my training this morning. The door was locked - no one answered the buzzer or appeared to see I was there thru their survailance camera. I walked allll the way around the building to the other door. Again no one answered the buzzer. Now I was late, and I didn't feel the "All parents are welcome" bit that the sign you could see thru the glass doors that I couldn't enter. So, I walked around to the other side of the building and despite the signs on the other doors that stated, "All doors are locked after 9:15 please use the buzzer", this one was unlocked. That made me feel not so great about the school security system.
I head to the office, and ask them why they didn't answer the buzzer or see me on the camera. For some reason the secretary had the buzzer off and the tv screens for the survailance cameras are to their backs sooo they don't look at them. Wow..now that's a great system.
Okay fine, I'll keep an eye on the whole buzzer system thing on future visits. Down to the library I go. I'm late but the system is pretty easy just a simple scanning of bar codes. The librarian introduces herself by her first name, I meet some other parents and then I notice a sign on the door with a name. That name is familiar...so I say "Mrs. (Name)...hmmm I was married to a (name) once..." She looks at me and says "That's my husband". (To respect their privacy I'm not listing the name.)
Yes, ex-husband number one who I don't have any contact with. I knew he was remarried but didn't know his wife was a school librarian, let alone the school librarian at my daughter's school. This appears to have upset her more than it did me, this became obvious when she came back to the room and then started using sign language to another staff member who came by. It didn't appear this particular person was unable to speak or needed to communicate via sign language and...evidently the wife of my ex-husband didn't realize that I knew sign language...It doesn't appear she likes me...
Thankfully, the time I will be volunteering she's not at the building so I probably won't see her again. Yet, as I walked out the doors that you can at least exit from though you can't gain entry thru, I wondered to myself...Does anything normal ever happen to me?

"liberal common sense"
Isn't that an OXYMORON?
To some people maybe, which is part of the reason for the name.
:-)
Well, welcome to the site, squeak. And in answer to your question, no, I don't believe that anything normal happens to ANYONE in our clan. I'm chuckling right now, so you know.
That sounds like a fun day. The only time I have had a situation where I said, "I know a ..." was when I was in a car accident where my friend was driving, rolled his jeep, and threw me out of the vehicle and onto the interstate. I was getting into the ambulance and a very confrotable backboard when a doctor came up and said "How are you? I am Dr Van Wiel." I said that was a coincidence because the guy who tried to kill me was also a Van Wiel.
That is pretty strange...thankfully it wasn't the doctor who tried to kill you.
:-)
OH! You're Lisa (Name). I've heard so much about you. LOL
I know that must have been a bit arkward for you, but when I read that part I spit out my soda, by the way you owe me for a new monitor (just kidding).
With all the stay home soccer mom's and their attitudes to the tow income famlies in town, I don't help out with school activities. The daty home stuck up mommies and so the extra work and from the way thier butts are, they need the extra work. ;)
It was just his dad. I was having a good time until they put me on that backboard. I was laughing at my friend while he was trying to kick the crap out of his truck and arguing with the ambulance people when they showed up an hour later over words. They kept asking if I was ejected and I kept telling them that I was thrown out. They did not find me humorous. That may be why they made my ride so uncomfortable
Lisa,
I don't know how you resisted the urge to let "the librarian" know that you were also fluent in signing, but you did, and that may come in very handy some day ;-)
Is her current husband's (your ex's) first name Tom, by chance?
More to follow via email :-)
Hey Lisa--a mysterious voice form the past....oooooo...LOL...it's Steve from the old excite board...how the hell are ya?
I confess I have spied your blog for a while...you are doing a great job.
The lack of security at Aubrey's school is scary...my kids are well into high school now, and it's lax there, too, until you need to get in there after the football game--locked up tight as a drum!
Hey--be well, Okay? I'll be stopping in again...
*seymore*
Hooda - nope but that is another family member
:-)
Steven! Thanks for stopping by and you are always welcome here.
((HUGS))
I guess I never had to worry about school security. At least not where I went. Because it cost so much to go there, we generally didn't have problems within the students and we had a patrol watched the outside. Mostly to catch up trying to leave for lunch.
Where my friend teaches now, the school has an office staffed with on duty officers. He said that he thinks there has been one day where someone wasn't arrested on school grounds so far this year. Then people in Des Moines wonder why some of their schools are so far behind others
They didn't used to have the buzzer system and the cameras until another local school had a scare with reports of a gunman in the school. It turned out they didn't find anyone but it made them re-think security from what I understand.
The kids old school district locked all of the side doors but the main door was open near the office.
We had a gun scare at a school here last week. Some 14 year old girls called one in because they thought it would be funny. It probably was until SWAT and the rest of the police department showed up guns drawn
ahh...yes...the old running into the ex-spouses new spouse...my dear wife had that happen before the ex's new wife was introduced to us...wasn't pretty at all...
As a parent whose child attended Riverside and was in school the day of the "gun scare" I have mixed emotions about the buzzer systems. I do think they are a good idea and very necessary to protect our children, but I've gone through the same thing Lisa has with having problems getting someone to answer the buzzers. I think it has more to do with the fact that the office staff is already over burdened most times without adding having to let people into the schools. But I don't think there is any other option than the one they are using. It does scare me to think that you did find a door that wasn't locked. I'm sure there was a reason for it, but it's not comforting is it?
My spouse and I were just talking last night about how today's kids don't have an easy life. We were able to grow up without all the fears that they have today and were able to experience the freedom that comes with not living in fear. I think I'd trade today's technology for yesterdays freedom in a heartbeat for my kids!
