How to keep cool without air conditioning

Yes, not everyone has air conditioning or at times can experience the break down of an air conditioning system. So how to stay cool?

Try these helpful hints.

Considering the temperature here today is expected to get close to 100 - we'll find out if they work. Especially #7:

Prepare your home against the heat. In the evening, open windows and use fans to create a cross-breeze, circulating cooler evening/night air through the rooms. As soon as the sun hits the building the next morning, close all windows, blinds, and curtains, and keep doors and windows closed throughout the day until it is cooler outside than it is inside. Then you can open everything up again and cool off to be prepared for the next day.

:-)

Right now at 9:20 a.m. the temperature inside the house is 80 degrees. Outside it is 80 degrees...

at 11:30 a.m. it is 82 degrees in the house and 86 degrees outside. So far so good...

2:06 p.m. it is 86 in the house and 92 degrees outside.

4:32 p.m. A little over 86 in the house and 94 degrees outside. Starting to get a bit uncomfortable but if you walk outside and come back in? Feels cooler in here than out there. Basement is at 80 degrees...

8:39 p.m. About 87 in the house and 88 outside. It's getting near dusk so will be time to start opening up windows to try to cool things off till tomorrow. Last night I messed up and turned the fans off down here since it was cooler. Tonight I'll keep them running and then shut the house up in the morning. Basement is still 80 degrees. Probably why all the cats are hanging out down there...

This may sound silly but since I work outside for a living, automotive locksmith work in Houston where it stays hot, I put ice inside my baseball cap and that keeps me from having a stroke while inside cars where the temp would bake bread. You don't suppose that has an affect on my writing now, hummm...

Actually that doesn't sound silly at all - I know people that use a wet cloth on their necks for the same reason. After the ice melts it keeps your head wet and cooler which does give your body the feeling that it is cooler.

Maybe we should see if there is some kind of an ice pack for hats type creation...

hmmm they have this but it appears the baseball cap is out of stock.

What a neat website! Too bad I'm too chicken to turn my A/C off and try some ;o)
If I had a car, I'd come get you, but like a dork I let my tags expire. **UGH** Work will definitely be interesting this week!
Hang in there lady, I'll call ya in a bit!

I say walk around naked with an ice pack on your neck. Try and get it so that you can cool the blood in the carotid artery so that it pumps cool blood thoughout your body.

I'm sure Miguel would appreciate that but not sure about the neighbors.

Ok, my question is why aren't you in the basement ;o) My 71 degrees has gone up to 74, come on over, I'll share!!! :-)

I should be in the basement - Miguel just got home so I'm going to play "Lisa creative chef" and whip up something that will not heat up the kitchen.

Growing up, we had to do this at our house. There was hell to pay if we failed to open or close blinds and windows at the proper time.

However, it worked.

The first time I lived anywhere with air I was 24. Now, I get hot inside easily.

I grew up without air then we had one window air conditioning unit. I've lived in other places without air. The worst one was when the A/C central air unit for the trailer (or if you prefer the classier "manufactured home") we lived in went out. That was pretty unbearable. So compared to those days? It's pretty chilly.

It got up to 100 here, but it has stayed about 74 in my house with no humidity.

Well, I'll tell you the same thing I told Holly today when we talked. At least I won't have a huge electric bill...that's my consolation point.

Even when you understand the science behind thermal conservation, it still seems like magic.

Have you ever caught a cable show titled the subterrainians? It's about people living underground, sometimes in caves, others living just under the ground.

They brag about their low cost, energy-efficient lifestyle. Some report heating and cooling costs of under a hundred dollars..., a year.

Yeh, we've been coping with heat/no AC.

Big exhaust fan moves air at night. Multiple fans (cieling/box) during the day.

Surviving.
