Jon Stainbrook wants to be the next Chair of the Lucas County Republican Party, it appears this is creating a mixed reaction. It's obvious that there have been some problems lately that some believe are directly related to not having a permanent chair. I'm not so sure on the blame factor, it appears that the Republicans not having a candidate to run for Common Pleas Judge Jack Zouhary's seat is due to Larry Kaczala, reversing his decision to run for the seat less than 24 hours before the candidate filing deadline. Local attorney, Michael Goulding attempted to file signatures for this seat with moments to spare on the last day, however no one seemed to catch the fact that two of the signature pages were not signed by those collecting signatures which made those pages invalid. That means Michael Goulding will have to run a write-in campaign. (Is it just me or has there been too many of these "signature" issues this primary?)
According to the Toledo Blade article, a few Republicans don't seem thrilled with Jon's offer:
Dennis Lange (The interim Chair) chuckled after hearing about it, then declared Mr. Stainbrook’s plans “a very interesting concept.”
Larry Kaczala had this to say: “I don’t think Jon would have credibility that one would need to be party chairman,” he said. “The person who’s chairman has to pretty much get along with anybody … I’m not sure people would return his phone calls.”
So what is it that seems to not impress those like Larry Kaczala?
Is it Jon's music career?
A lot of people seem to like Jon, if we flash back to 2004 Toledo City Paper
Most underrated local band:
Maybe I just admire him because he used to be a good friend to punk god GG Allin, but Jon Stainbrook and those madmen in The Stain seriously rock. They’re even kicking the ass of Aaron Lewis and that OTHER Stain band that got all the radio airplay. Plus, when you see Stainbrook banging on the drums, sporting that "Eraserhead" ‘do and pissing off the audience with his brutally honest stage patter … you just can’t get more punk rock than that.

Sure he's ran for office a few times and not won, one of those times was against Larry Kaczala. There doesn't seem to be a requirement that you have to have been an elected official to be the local chair. It should also be noted that Jon is running in the primary for Republican State Central Committee District 11, against Republicans John Birmingham of Toledo, William Jennings of Toledo, and the personal favorite of LCS, Dave Schulz of Toledo.
There is one thing about Jon taking over as Chair of the Lucas County GOP, I'd bet he'd make sure their website was updated and he most certainly would generate more attention.

I have interviewed Jon before, and while he is an earnest and likeable person, I cannot see how the GOP could choose him for county chair. A few thoughts:
1. Jon comes across as a little flaky and unconventional due to his careers in rock music and entertainment reporting. While those qualities are fine for grass roots work, or the more nefarious party operative duties, I don't think he would be able to garner the sort of respect that a chair needs.
2. He is too close to the Joe Kidd - Bernadette Noe war that sparked Coingate, Dieboldgate, Fritzgate, and all the other scandals that rocked the local party. The next chair should be someone a million miles from all of that mess.
3. There is still bad blood between he and Kaczala (despite the public denials). Larry is one of the few local GOP figures not tainted by Noe connections, and as such he commands a lot of power right now. No way in hell he would let Stainbrook have that job without a fight.
4. Finally - what qualifications does he have? Answer: not many beyond four losing political campaigns and a decade or more of grunt work. He has little experience leading an organization (unless The Stain counts as an organization).
Jon is the consummate dedicated party worker, but I don't see him as a party leader.
Mike, I was being semi-tongue in cheek except for the part about not all of the blame for things can be laid at the door of not having a permanent chair.
I was surprised the Blade wrote this and it seems Jon's desire to be GOP chair came as a surprise too.
Joe Kidd's ringing endorsement probably is not helpful. But you have to admit it would make things interesting if Jon were to get the job...
:-)
Ha. Sorry, my cold-addled brain missed your cheekiness.
Maybe the Blade wrote it as a favor to Jon, or maybe they really like him as GOP chair. Who knows.
Yes, we can all agree that Jon Stainbook as chair would be one wild ride.
Maybe I need to be cheeky more often so you see it coming - lol.
What I do find that is really curious is why did the Blade write this article and did Larry Kaczala realize he was going to be quoted.
It is a direct slam. There's not many other ways you can take what Larry was quoted as saying.
Why would the republican party want him to be the chair? He worked for the Kerry campaign during the presidential election. Does this sound like someone that the republicans can support???? I think not.
Why would any good republican run against Larry Kaczala??? They wouldn't. Jon is not a good republican, he is a want a be and need to forward in his life.
Having a press conference for the charimanship with the Blade without even applying for the job is ridiculous.
He needs to find a real job and move on in life.
