IP address and ISP, it's what sitemeter does. It even tells you how long someone has been on the blog and how many pages they viewed.
For individual users just gives an IP address and the name of the ISP but business or government offices show up with a listing. Like I get alot of visits from the Department of Justice, think I have a fan that works there. Same with colleges, the name of the college is a part of their ISP.
Even tracks out of the country, I have a few reades that are over-seas. It's pretty nifty, though the first time the government ISP's started showing up I wondered if I did something wrong - lol
Here's an example of what it tells me:
Domain Name atfonline.gov ? (United States Government) IP Address 199.196.144.# (Executive Office of Asset Forfeiture) 199.196.144.11 ISP Executive Office of Asset Forfeiture Location Continent : North America Country : United States (Facts) State : Virginia City : Dulles Lat/Long : 39.0853, -77.6452 (Map)

Yeah, that stuff could make you paranoid if you let it.
I had a lot of hit from usdoj.gov (Department of Justice) recently. I was a bit weirded out until someone told me they were probably reading my articles on the neo-Nazis.
It doesn't bother me anymore though I do wonder how that many gov employees have time to surf. Now I think it's funny but yes that first time I felt like you did, it was during the whole Terri Schiavo situation and I had written some research information I had found on the one judge.
creepy... very creepy... I mean, hmm, ahh ... it is great to see our responsible government tapping the pulse of the blogging world in order to benefit all with their gained insight...
Stephanie, you don't need technical skills to be a blogger. If you did? My 11 year old would not be able to blog nor would alot of the adults who currently blog.
Sure, you do have to learn some tech skills to make changes and do some of the other things some of us have done to our blogs, but as to the basics? Technical skill isn't necessary and some of the things you don't know? You have alot of people that would be glad to help you (like me) if you wanted to expand beyond a basic blog.
Besides technical skills (which *groan* I probably could learn with help from such as yourself) I'd also need the money for it, which I don't have either. I could be wrong, but I doubt having my own blog would be free...especially with lurker protection. :-)
Yeah the stalking/lurker factor can be a problem though I don't let it get to me.
However, if you ever decide you do have free time (yeah I know lol) blogging can be fun and you can be alot more anonymous than I've been. Sometimes I wonder if the way I've done it was the smart way.
That's probably true, really anyone who wanted to find any of us could. But there are ways to be careful, like making sure your personal address/phone number information doesn't show up in any of the search directories. I check every so often to make sure where my name shows up at.
And I should add to make sure where it doesn't show up at - lol
I also watch the girls very closely to make sure they aren't revealing to much personal information on the net. That's almost a full time job sometimes.
"But if weird phone calls, libelous posts, and cyber-stalkers would freak you out, then stay anonymous, Stephanie."
Hey, that's why I use a psuedonym in my writing! However, I've already posted my correct name w/ VOID for legal reasons. I don't think there's anyway out of that.
Though, what kind of shocked me, is blogging on a different site I've gotten my first electronic proposal. Luckily, he doesn't seem like the stalker type. It's just weird.
BTW, about how much would it cost to start up my own blog?
I'm getting fans on that other blog, which is weird, and someone even tracked me down well enough to get my e-mail through VOID. Luckily NOT the proposal guy, not even a guy at all.
Somehow doing what I normally do has now impressed three people. I must be doing it wrong over there. No, I take that back, some of them are still resorting to name-calling.
blogspot is free so there's no cost to set up a blog. I have a domain I use to host images but there are free sources now thru blogger and places like photobucket that make that not even necessary.
Sooo it would cost you time only, which of course is priceless.
That's strange. Your sitemeter comment was posted when I made my last comment, but now my comment is sandwiched between your two. Hmm? I've noticed several weird things since blogger did their tinkering yesterday night.
You know, this (getting my own blog) would mean that I'd have to come up with something to say BEFORE somebody else wrote something goofy for me to balk at.
Yeah I've noticed that too sometimes, they were down for maintenance last night again trying to finish working on some of the issues. That's a downside to a free service, when it goes down you really can't complain.
I know you weren't complaining, and I don't either. Not when it's free - lol
All you have to do is click on the little blogger logo up there on the main page of my blog and create your own blog. Takes about 10 minutes which includes picking a template.

You can track people who visit but don't comment?

Vote Quimby!
lol catdaddy, I wish they'd start commenting...maybe we could get some secret information
:-)
See, and my guess would be that you showing "sympathy" for the rioters had gotten their attention.
Does that make me more paranoid?
No Stephanie that means you too have the right stuff to be a....
Blogger!
:-)
"...you too have the right stuff to be a....
Blogger!"
Yeah, except for the deep and abiding lack of technical skills, sure.
:-(

Thus ends Lisa's recruitment speech....
:-)
It also comes in handy to be able to tell if stalkers are lurking....
Besides technical skills (which *groan* I probably could learn with help from such as yourself) I'd also need the money for it, which I don't have either. I could be wrong, but I doubt having my own blog would be free...especially with lurker protection.

Don't give up hope. I may yet do it...right now, I just don't see how I could pull it off.

I'd probably go with something like... "Stephanie's Mindmagic."
By linking my posts to VOID, I don't think I can keep my identity secure from anyone who really wants to have it.

Agreed, Lisa.
I have been through the cyber-harassment ringer with all sorts of kooks by eschewing anonymity.
If you don't mind dealing with lunatics, then go ahead and use your name.
But if weird phone calls, libelous posts, and cyber-stalkers would freak you out, then stay anonymous, Stephanie.
Stalkers suck, that's all I'm going to say on that subject
:-)

lol - that's why I posted the picture that I did in my profile on WatchBlog, instant image that I'm not available.
:-)
You could do like I do and use your maiden name for writing purposes.
:-)
Sssh! Don't say that, Lisa, you'll give it away!
BTW, about how much would it cost to start up my own blog?

Ooo... Cool! Hmm. I definitely have to come up with something better than "Stephanie's Mindmagic" then.
Sitemeter which is really handy at tracking visitors also is free. You can upgrade but I've never found it necessary.
:-)
That's strange. Your sitemeter comment was posted when I made my last comment, but now my comment is sandwiched between your two. Hmm? I've noticed several weird things since blogger did their tinkering yesterday night.

I'm not complaining, just noticing.
Sooo.... How do I get started?
I know you weren't complaining, and I don't either. Not when it's free - lol
All you have to do is click on the little blogger logo up there on the main page of my blog and create your own blog. Takes about 10 minutes which includes picking a template.
Then? You are a blogger....
I clicked and got stuck on having to name my blog. I've got a few ideas though. Just haven't chosen yet. I'll keep you informed on my progress.
Whew! Here it goes...
Politics, Parenting and Other Hazardous Pastimes
A baby blog is born!
...of course NOW I experience writer's block.
Ooo...I'm a blogger now, so I don't have to type in my info any more!
So, how do I do the blogroll thing?
Never mind...I figured it out. Except how to get the VOID logo there.
