Okay so that's a bad pun, but 17 year old Michael Coviello, felt that the Hasbrouck Heights school dress code that limited when shorts could be worn yet allowed skirts to be worn year round was discriminatory.
To make his point he started wearing a skirt to school.
Coviello first wore a costume-style dress but high school officials told him to go home and change. The district's superintendent then advised the Coviello to purchase everyday dresses and skirts at a retail store, which Coviello did, the ACLU said.
But after a few days, he was sent home with a note from his principal saying if he wore a dress, kilt or skirt, he could no longer attend school.
Thanks to the ACLU, a settlement was reached, not that everyone could wear shorts, but that he could wear a skirt. Will he prevail? Or will he be left spending the remaining time until April 15th when shorts are again allowed wearing a skirt?

My high school superintendant told us that "cross-dressing" was not allowed, but kilts were okay I guess. It wasn't in the dress code or in any sort of written rule, though, but a cross-dressing incident on the morning video announcements resulted in the banning of the student anchorman from acting in the announcements. Can't have video documentation, after all. I think this happens at every high school, some must just be more newsworthy than others.
This is a bullshit issue (sorry Emily). Why is there a no short policy in Winter? Gee, I dunno. Maybe it's a HEALTH ISSUE. So that students don't get sick and miss too many days of school and get held back. Where are the parents of this freak? Oh, we support anything he does. Slap this kid and his parents for being moroons.
The school should have left him wear the skirt and let him get beat up in high school for being a pain in the ass freak. Then the issue would have dropped.
The ACLU helping minors buck authority and not respect rules for the protect for all. He's 17. The parents should have done their job, but they failed. I'm sorry but it does get cold in NJ in winter time. Not way in hell my kids would be wearing shorts in winter, even in 45 degree weather that we had today, which is warm in winter. Let this kid go in a refrig for six hours in shorts and let him say that he should still wear shorts in the winter.
Sorry Lisa, but this isn't a civil rights issue. It's a health issue. If we let minors get more empowered over adults than we will see an American version of 'The Killing Feilds' where the children decide who lives and dies.
The only thing that disagrees with that logic C, and I agree it is a health issue is you should see the skirts the girls wear in the winter. Guys wearing shorts would show alot less skin. That's probably what led to this protest as no matter the frigidness of the weather you will see some of these girls wearing shorts as close to breaking and breaking the "approved" length.
I don't see this as a necessary use for the ALCU but? Maybe things are slow in NJ right now - lol.

I agree with Lisa. It should be a health issue, but you have to have some consistency. If my shorts go to my knees and your skirt barely covers your ass, I think I will be warmer.
That coming from a guy who went to private school and had to wear the same thing everyday. Navy slacks and a blue button down shirt. The girls all wore the typical Catholic school girl uniform. That was before we knew that outfit was hot and not boring
I agree with most of the posters that this is a frivolous and juvenile form of protest.
He's lucky that his school doesn't switch to full scale uniforms, like those ugly Maoist unisex deals.
Few comments here:
the kid is obviously rebelling. If doing so involves wearing a skirt rather than snorting coke, starting a knife collection, or beating up others... great.
Cyberseaer, good luck getting a 17 year old to do want you want them to do... Sometimes, the best battle is the one that is ignored, otherwise things escalate...
Had this kid been ignored, he would've stopped and the issue would be dead. First time a girl tells him he looks ridiculous, off with the skirt. Unless he looks good in it, who knows. If it was good enough for Scotts for centuries, maybe it's good enough for him, as long as he wears underwear...
And yeah, not much goes on in NJ... Well, with the exception of the governor announcing he's gay and that he gave his lover a high end job he wasn't qualified for... Sometimes, you just have to wander about New Jersey...
In defense of the guy:
When I was in junior high there was a similiar thing. A group of guys--protesting our dress-code--wore skirts to school. Of course, they were full-length skirts worn over jeans, so...
But those guys were popular and respected by the student body for standing up for something they cared about.
In defense of the girls:
1) Girls generally wear nylons or tights with their skirts.
2) Women have, for most of our existence, been ENCOURAGED to wear clothing that is uncomfortable or not appropriate for the weather for the sake of appearance. Now it's winter and short skirts. A few centuries ago (actually, not even that long) it was ridiculously heavy dresses, with lots of under things, in the heat of summer (think Scarlett O'Hara here). Even now, in other parts of the world, women are wearing long BLACK head-to-toe dresses for the sake of modesty (since it's certainly not for the sake of physical comfort). Everything from high-heels to shaving your legs...these are not for our comfort, but for the sake of maintaining an "acceptable" appearance.
Until that expectation changes (which, despite feminists' conviction that it has, it really hasn't, it has simply morphed with the times) you can expect women and girls to make ridiculous choices in apparrel, to fit whatever style is currently in vogue. Those who don't generally sacrifice some of their popularity for the sake of their comfort or maintaining their moral standard.
Maybe the school dress code should be revised so that everyone has to wear skirts.
I predict everything would settle down in about 2 days.
