Mike Ferner, a former Toledo councilman and one-time mayoral candidate, was arrested yesterday with his brother for spray-painting anti-war slogans on overpasses along I-475/U.S. 23 in Maumee and Sylvania Township. (More at the title link)
Next time? Use signs, the legal penality when caught is alot less than using spray paint and depending on Ohio Law might not even be illegal.
While I don't agree with all of the messages, I do support the free speech and the right of people to protest. Freeway Blogger has advice, information and examples of signs that have been used all across America. One I am fond of:

"Mr. Finkbeiner, who is to be sworn in again as mayor tomorrow, said last night he has "a lot of respect" for his former rival's integrity and passion concerning certain issues, but painting graffiti on public places "probably was less than an appropriate thing for him to do."
A remarkably restrained response from Carty, for once...
C'mon Carty, where's your PASSION?
Surely you can respond more like you would have during your first term.
He's not sworn in yet...
:-)
When I see graffiti supporting a cause like "anarchy" or "trust Jesus" I count that as a hit against the cause. Yes, it is nonviolent protest, but the insolence of defacing someone else's property or public property instead of using their own resources to convey the message irks me. I wouldn't expect this from someone hoping to keep their credibility.
I don't disagree with you Aaron, which is why I support the idea of using signs instead, they don't destroy property and they are in most places if you watch where you place them not illegal.
You'd think a former city councilperson would exhibit more respect of public property.
Freedom of speech is not a freedom from responsibility.
Expressing one's beliefs doesn't and, imo, shouldn't trump respecting other peoples' property.
I agree, a former city councilperson should have known better.
OK, it's blog-pimping, but I just interviewed Mike Ferner at his home:

I'm trying to comment right now and be more tactful than I feel...
lol
:-)
Mike and Lisa,
I too responded with restraint; way too uncharacteristic for me ;-)
