It's hard to have faith in people at times.....

Today is one of those times. The phone rang early this morning, it was my oldest daughter. Someone broke into their home near the College which they had already had all kinds of problems with the Landlord (Westhaven) with. The locks were just changed yesterday, no signs of forced entry at the time of writing this. All of her personal information was stolen, a laptop, Xbox and both her and her boyfriend's wallets. To add insult to injury when the police showed up they asked her if any keys were missing and she discovered her car was also stolen.

Which means not only did she lose personal identification, credit cards, debit cards even her birth certificate but her car and all of her textbooks that were in the car. The car is insured, she's still making payments on it. We've had our rough moments financially as a family, and Emily has done an excellent job at being responsible. She's worked hard for what little she has, maintaining not only good grades in College but working an almost full-time job and a part-time job. Understandably she feels violated, it's not like they can just run out and replace these items. While of course she will over-come this as we have all of the other things we've been thru, and no one deserves to have things stolen from them...This is one of those moments where I shake my fist at the sky and ask...Why?

Then I offer the sincere hope that whatever reason these people felt it necessary to steal from them that karma will visit them, and soon. Very soon.

Sorry to hear about this, Lisa. There are some really disturbed SOBs out there.

I can't imagine the shock of finding that most of your worldly possessions have been stolen. I know how mad I got when some punk stole my lawnmower, or when a robber would hold up one of my former businesses for $100 or so.

If she's interested in getting her story out to a wider audience, let me know (you know my email). This kind of stuff really burns me up.

Turns out Westhaven didn't change the locks for the front door. Supposedly they are doing that now but it's a little late. At least her car is insured, however the rest of the stuff stolen from her roommates isn't.

I'll tell her Mike, she's torn right now between wanting her car back hoping it's not too destroyed and trying to figure out what to do if it isn't found. Not to mention all of her textbooks and the rest of the school stuff she had in her car. She's on internship this semester so transportation is a huge issue for her right now.

At least she's okay, it's pretty scary to realize this happened while they were sleeping.

Good theory BBP, I tend to go to far the other way and give people more credit than I should. Though I'm getting better at being less trusting.

I think what was the worst for her was the car being stolen. She was so proud of that car, her first nice one. Her first two cars were def POS status.

Lisa, if they didn't change the locks, it doesn't have to be someone she knows. Who knows how many keys the previous tenants had - or who they've given them to since then? Have Emily contact UT's legal services ASAP. Unless she waived the $6 fee, she's entitled to assistance through them as a student. Westhaven was negligent at not getting those locks changed before she even moved in - especially in that area. Someone has clearly been casing the house and car.

Val, one of her roommates is dealing with Westhaven on that issue. I agree they should be liable since lord knows how many keys were floating around and they have had several different groups of repair people in since they moved in. The house was vacant for quite some time and there were alot of maintainance issues that came up.

I hope that she gets her car and stuff back, but at least it was just stuff. Yes stuff she was proud to own and that she earn and I'm sure there was stuff was taken that can never be replaced, but in the end it was stuff. Thank God she wasn't hurt. Money and things can be replaced, people can't.

I know that you are angry and ask why and how these things happen, but they do. It comes down to freewill. Unfornately the creep who commit this act use his freewill for selfish and evil reasons. Hopefully this criminal will be brougt to justice and lose his/her freewill for a long time. I know that your faith is shaken yet again in the goodness of people. Most people are good and decent, we just don't hear about it because it's not newsworthy in the papers and TV.

Ok, I'll get off my soapbox before the mob throws me down. At this time you don't want to hear the words I say now. I understand that. At this time, they are small comfort. I've been robbed from and wanted to punch the person who talked like I have done now. But I hope that when the emotional anger that is flowing through your body, and rightfully so, that you reread this and try to keep your faith in the goodness of people.

I'm glad to hear that Emily wasn't physcially hurt and that she gets through this stress filled time with her mother's grace and poise.

Thanks C, and I know you are right at least she slept thru it all and wasn't hurt. It could have been alot worse than just losing a car and a few possessions.

I doubt they'll catch the person, the police weren't really that interested.

At least they finally have new doors...

Lisa?

If it's any consolation, the only things I have left from my "college days" are an old FM 104 black tshirt, an old Roxanne's tshirt and a pair of Henry J's suspenders.

Stereo Equipment, video game platforms, wallets, money, and quite a few cars have passed thru my life and had not made it this far.

Small pauses in life such as what your child is experencing are character-building experences no school can teach.

I do hope if the perps are captured, an opprotunity to address these slugs by teathering them into a bucket of water and shooting a Taser at thier loinal areas and broadcast it on Local Public Access may be the Crime Prevention Tool Toledo needs.

Sleigh bells and fishing line across all access points should deter further hooliganism.

lol Brian good idea and amazingly we obviously frequented the same places...Roxanne's and Henry J's.

I'm sorry to hear about this. Is it possible that the person who put in the lock, or someone closely associated with the process took her stuff? That would make it a little easier to track them.

It's never easy to be stolen from, even when it is something easily replacable. There's always that feeling of violation. I pray your daughter will be able to feel safe and comfortable within her own home very soon and that her items are returned to her as quickly and wholly as possible.

This morning she said she was moving, now that they've replaced both doors and changed the locks I think she's going to stay.

The car was what was worth the most money possession wise and thankfully it is fully insured so at least if they don't find it or if it is damaged that will be taken care of.

She seemed to be doing better last time I talked to her, and thank you Stephanie, I've been doing that alot today.

Though this base may already be covered...

Considering how much personal information was stolen, she should probably contact credit bureaus and the like to report it as well. The last thing she needs is for her credit to be ruined by the scum who did this on top of everything else. Closing or freezing all her current accounts isn't enough, the creep can take out new credit accounts with the info he/she has and ruin her credit that way. Contacting the credit bureaus may prevent that.

You're very welcome. If there's anything more I can do, just let me know.

The best light to focus on during times like these is...you don't have to go through them alone. Sometimes that's the only thing that can really help.

The only thing that I would add id the word BAD before karma...

Sometimes life sucks.

If the locks were just changed, maybe the locksmith...

I will see if any of my DoD friends can have people wiretapped to get to the bottom of this. Since Bush and I are close friends, I don't see a problem and we will even try to make the punks pay interest.

I had my car broken into once and they took my speakers and stereo. I don't know why they needed to break all the windows and the dash, but I guess they just wanted to make sure I didn't have any cash hidden

Good call Stephanie, and yes that's been taken care of as well since they stole so much personal id.

Thanks me4...and yes HT...bad Karma...very bad karma...
