Trying to evacuate from Houston....

If cars are only going 48 miles in 13 hours how do they expect people to not run out of gasoline? I just saw on CNN some people are pushing their cars rather than keep them running because they are afraid they will run out of gas. They still have people coming into Houston which makes no sense, so that has delayed making the other side head north. Supposedly they are going to get people out there to help those who have run out of gas but if they don't get moving soon? People are going to be stuck by the roadside when Rita hits.

This is exactly what keeps people from evacuating, as I'd bet some of those heading back into Houston have given up on trying to escape and have decided to ride the storm out at home out of fear they are going to be stuck on the highway. If gas stations are closed, you've been there that long and don't have any hope of getting enough gas to make it to Austin? You'd turn back.

Looks like Louisiana again is waiting too long to call for evacuation. It was obvious that they were going to get some of the brunt of Rita given how huge it was.

Telling people now to "head North" is going to place them on the road as the winds hit. Keeping my fingers crossed on this one because it doesn't look good.

Tell people to evacuate, then be surprised that alot of TSA workers didn't show up at the Houston Airport.

Given the huge increase in numbers of people trying to get out and the decrease in workers due to them wanting to get out or given the traffic might not even be able to get to the airport?

I have to ask this question...do any of these emergency planners actually have a concept of reality?

Lisa,
Some would say that the people of Louisiana are a little slow. I disagree.

I would say that the politicians of Louisiana are definitely slow though...

I agree, HT, thankfully Rita has dropped to a four, let's hope the storm drops even farther before it makes landfall.

I was talking about some of the parishes to the east of New Orleans Bob, some of the parishes decided on their own to order a mandatory evacuation, then today Blanco was on tv telling people to "head north".

I realize they have buses in New Orleans lots of empty buses because people have already left or were not leaving again.

As you can see in the comments Texas isn't doing alot better in a smooth evacuation in Houston. They ordered all lanes to go North in the morning yet it took all day for that to happen and in some areas it still looks like it isn't.
