Disappointing Primary Turn out in Toledo

Looks like it's going to be under 15% and despite all of the comments I've read and heard in public doesn't appear people are truly interested in change. Especially as far as City Council went. Bob McCloskey was the top vote getter which is ironic given the numerous discussion about not only his character but the fact that he wasn't exactly being honest with signs saying "re-elect" when he was not running for re-election as a district councilman he was going for one of the at large seats since he had met term limits for a district seat.

Karyn McConnell Hancock, despite all of those that said they would never vote for her? Originally looked as if she would be in the top five but the final count put her beneath Karen Shanahan, Bob Vasquez, and Mark Sobczak who were all first timers.

Mitch Balonek doesn't look like he is going to pull it off since four of the bottom vote getters will be cut. It surprised me that Ernie Berry got more votes than Mitch did. Dave Shulz and Karen Shanahan will make the cut. As it appears, business as usual in Toledo, only one new face will probably make it into the top numbers in November.

As far as the mayoral race? Same answer, change isn't really what Toledo must want since it appears at this point to be Carty versus Ford. For a short time it looked like Wilkowski had the second spot. Still absentee ballots to count so it might change, last count Keith was down by 635 votes.

At times I wonder do people really want change and if so? Where are all of these people that stated they wanted new faces when the election actually takes place? Did they forget they actually have to show up at the polling place to make it happen?

I saw what you wrote Bob and tried to comment twice but got a page error, same thing happened here earlier so I'll try to comment again later.

As always? Good satire work, though in this case it would be funnier if the truth of what you wrote wasn't so sad.

My sentiments exactly about the choice of the voters.

Robert Hienlien wrote through one of his characters (Stranger in a Strange Land) that the reason people laugh is because it hurts. Bob's article is like head trauma...

Toledoans don't want change. They prefer wallowing in their own feces. Yesterday’s primary is proof of that. In fact most Toledoans are jealous of New Orleans. They only wish that Katrina had befallen them so that they could be mired in more self pity. The big difference though is that Toledo brings on its own disasters.

Pimpdaddy obviously visited Bob's site orrrr he is on the same wave length.

Remember though PD, if Opal was right now that she didn't win? We are in for destruction of biblical proportions. The only people that will be saved probably are the ones who voted for her.

By the way...We ARE getting change..unless you think toledo is the great place it used to be about 30 years ago...but IT ISN'T the kind people want!! I think most have just finally realized after years of fighting/voting that Block owns and operates Lucas County, and they've simply given up.

Lisa,
Actually I had not been to Bob's site. I just popped in there now after reading your comment. Yikes that is scary!

My point is that Toledo "thinks" it wants change but does nothing about it. Toledo "thinks" it has an image problem. It doesn't though. The rest of the country sees Toledo as an inbred rustbelt city and a haven for all things backward.

The only problem that Toledo has with its self image is that the average (Toledo has a really wide bell curve) resident isn't willing to accept the reality of what the rest of the country sees.

Well PD, given both you and Bob have demonstrated an excellent use of satire? How about we use the expression "Great Minds think alike" to describe what happened?
