Basra breaks ties with British

CNN is reporting as linked above that they have cut ties with the British until they:

Ubadi said: "Our decision is to cut off our relations with the Multinational Forces until we receive a formal apology from the British government for this act.

"We also ask for the return of two detainees to Iraqi custody, compensation for the casualties that resulted, and compensation to the major crimes unit for the destruction of the facility."

If the reports are true that the two British soldiers that were under-cover were involved in something illegal doesn't Iraq have the right to try them? If the British were truly negotiating then why was it necessary to break into the prison? If the Iraqi interior minister did order the two to be released why was this order ignored by Basra? Basra breaking off relations with not only the British but the whole multinational force does not hold anything positive. Hopefully the British and the US forces will find a way to resolve this.

This is an insane development. Reality stranger than fiction? I think so in this case. How will we learn the truth, and will it matter in the long run? I told this story to some coworkers, and talked about the 5 Iraqi's were killed in the incursion. They shrugged, whats 5 more when 100k are already gone. At first I was taken aback, but it shows how comfortably numb people get to the news of whats happening far away, or just happening every day. I feel this attitude is indicative of the Isreali/Palistinian conflict as well.

I agree with you aaron we have become numb and we also dehumanize their loss so it doesn't affect us the way things here in the US do. 24 elderly killed on a bus evacuating makes the hourly news almost all day yet in Iraq? Maybe a quick blurb if it is a slow news day.
