Top ranked technorati story

I wasn't surprised to see it was about Cindy Sheehan, but after I read it I have to say I agree with some of the points made, especially this:

They're not children in Iraq; they're grown-ups who made their own decision to join the military. That seems to be difficult for the left to grasp. Ever since America's all-adult, all-volunteer army went into Iraq, the anti-war crowd have made a sustained effort to characterize them as "children." If a 13-year-old wants to have an abortion, that's her decision and her parents shouldn't get a look-in. If a 21-year-old wants to drop to the broadloom in Bill Clinton's Oval Office, she's a grown woman and free to do what she wants. But, if a 22- or 25- or 37-year-old is serving his country overseas, he's a wee "child" who isn't really old enough to know what he's doing.

I know most of you that comment here whether you agree with the war or are against the war have made similar comments that our soldiers are not children.

I think the article goes a bit to far in some of the personal comments made about Cindy Sheehan, but there are some good points made.

lol Paul, my "liberal" standing is still semi secure at the moment since I don't agree with all of what he wrote.

I do have to say though lately it is harder to agree with alot of what the more to the left than I am is doing. I find myself more to the center on some of current issues.

I agree when this is over Cindy will have lost so much more than her son. I just have this feeling that with the "dueling" parents type scenario we are at more will be divided rather than united.

I think if she would have kept to her initial statements minus the Bush twins enlisting part she might have gone further. While Move on did help her in alot of ways that connection has also harmed her if the goal was to increase more moderate/centrist type support. That is what it is going to take for an anti-war movement to be successful, you have to have the support of mid stream america.

Probably why on Kos one of the diaries is advising the more "extreme" left to not go to Camp Casey, but rather to organize locally or send financial contributions.

I agree with you Brew the marriage part went to far, I also don't agree with Dowd's version either.

The truth lies somewhere inbetween both extremes.

I've heard repeatedly the issue that these soliders are not children and it doesn't matter if their parents agree with their decision to enlist. While it does hurt to lose adult children just as much as to lose younger children the difference here is that most of these soldiers did volunteer knowing there was a chance they could die or be wounded. Especially those that re-enlisted after the war in Iraq.

No matter how Cindy Sheehan feels about the war or did feel about the war Casey Sheehan chose to re-enlist. He was not some young teen sold a song and dance by recruiters.

Creating more division is not going to end the war, creating a message the mainstream of america will accept given the misgivings about the war might.

I'd like my friends home now too, but not if I know more will just have to go back later.

Cindy's Diary

This is exacty what I take issue with.

"What we as Moms need to stop doing is giving our children to the military industrial war complex to be used as human cluster bombs: to kill innocent civilians and perhaps to die enriching and feeding the gluttonous war machine."

So as I stated before, when you change the message from a simple I want an answer from the President on why my son died to this? This is more than just that, this is not only anti-war but anti-military.

As much as anyone hates the idea of war I don't think many of us believe we need to eliminate the military. She keeps giving ammo to be used against her. This is getting so twisted and so far out there that it will not work. This is NOT the way to get those like me on her side and that is what it is going to take.

I keep distancing myself further with each statement I read.

I agree with that paragraph you cut and pasted here Lisa. When emtions run high, logic is thrown out with the bathwater. So I guess the age of majority is subject to the debate on hand.

I feel sorry for Mr. Qualls and for Cindy Sheehan. They have both lost a lot. I think it is fair to criticise both of them for what they are saying but the personal attacks on Cindy Sheehan show just how out of control SOME of the people on the Right are.

If Cindy Sheehan is being used by the Left then Mr. Qualls must be being used by the Right. I don't see why it is somehow wrong for either of the two to have opinions and express them anyway. As far as i am concerned, if either of them wants to express an opinion that just demonstrates they believe in freedom. Why should we think less of Qualls or Sheehan for having a political opinion? Is it really our place to determine what a good parent or a bad parent of a dead soldier is?

I was at a very big left wing (one of my favorites) site yesterday that was very tough (though not personally so) on Mr. Qualls and my message (posted with my name) was to lay off of the man and let him speak.

This is an important debate Cindy Sheehan has started. The Iraq War has been virtually ignored for large numbers of people for well over a year now. This is giving a platform for all parents of the soldiers.
