It's part of human nature, however at times I think the media brings out the gawker side of us. I've been following the coverage of Hurricane Katrina, because I know people there and New Orleans is one of my favorite cities.
Thankfully I don't have cable, else I'd see on most of the news channels various reporters and those from the Weather Channel in places they really shouldn't be just so we can get our fix of what it is"really" like.
Yesterday the focus was on the total destruction of New Orleans, the whole "Atlantis" scenario. On the right side of the blogosphere they were slamming the Governor and the Mayor. On the left side of the blogosphere they were blaming Bush. Realistically only a small amount of blame is on either side. Anyone who doesn't realize that New Orleans is below sea level and the very levies built to protect the city also damaged millions of acres of wetlands that would have helped to diminish some of the possible damage hasn't been paying attention. This is nothing new. Those who are saying had it not been for the war in Iraq there would have been money spent to better prepare New Orleans are obviously living in a different country than I do. New Orleans has known as most coastal cities know it's not a matter of if but when. Other than moving the entire city there is not much that can be done to stop Mother Nature to prevent things like this. You can try to diminish the effects and have a sound evacuation plan but there is no magic cure to prevent hurricanes.
We've been told stories of graves opening up, "toxic gumbo" if the city floods then some stories trying to imply the roof was going to blow off of the Superdome dooming all of those inside. When the reports first started coming in that it looked like New Orleans was not facing the total destruction of a Category 5 Hurricane first predicted, it seemed like some of these reporters were almost disappointed. They were quick to add that there could still be "widespread damage".
I hope the Big Easy gets thru this, and that the loss of life is minimal. If there is one thing I do know about New Orleans, no matter what happens? They will rebuild.

Important weather bulletin for Northwest Ohio at Toledo Tales
Eevrything you need to know about Hurricane Cartyrina.
You have to love the political crap. No matter what, the one side must blame the other. Oh look, a bird crapped on my car it must be (insert the Repulican or Democrat you would like to blame based on your political association and if it is an electional year or not)'s fault. I knew that (insert a number of deflamory adjectives with an explosive noun you would like to use depending on how pissed off you are at the time) would be the end of the world, our lifestyle and (I always love this one) OUR FREEDOM!!!!!!!!!!!
I wish that these blindfolded sheep would either shut up and help or just be led to the slaughter house so that the rest of us can help those in need.
As for me, I blame everyone in politics that this happened. I just hate to be left out of the blame game.
Alas now it is a Category 2 storm what will they report?
Sad thing though is alot of people headed east to Gulfport because they thought that area would be safe and it ended up getting hit pretty hard.
You'd think eventually we would be better at this whole storm forecasting.
I stayed up waiting for New Orleans to become lost like Atlantis, but it didn't happen. Although I should be happy, I was kind of disappointed that pumping water out of New Orleans won't replace that Aruba stuff as the main story
Lisa,
You make some good points, but what is something like a 24/7/365 Weather Channel supposed to do?
These people LIVE for this stuff!
Roofs blowing off (from 8 different camera angles), horizontal rain (in sheets), weather radar loops every 10 minutes, gagles of reporters out in the weather, and let's not forget the countless satellite pictures…
This stuff is orgasmic (to them)!
And, let's not forget the California mud slide season;-)
Now, if only we had two Weather Channels… :-)
$10 billion from the Feds to rebuild doesn't seem like enough...it was good to see former presidents Bush and Clinton clinton coming together for fund raising work.
aaron,
Former Presidents Bush the elder (Papa Bush) and Bill (Bubba) Clinton have become fast friends in recent months.
Som would even say "Thick as Thie...,
(Not gonna go there.)
Yeah, they're "buds."
