WASHINGTON -- The government announced an 11-nation crackdown Thursday on internet piracy organizations responsible for stealing copies of the latest Star Wars film and other movies, games and software programs worth at least $50 million.
FBI agents and investigators in the other nations conducted 90 searches starting Wednesday, arresting four people, seizing hundreds of computers and shutting down at least eight major online distribution servers for pirated works.
I have mixed emotions on this one. Yes I realize that pirated work cuts down on the profits by the artist/company. I don't do this, because first of all I 'm back on a dial up so it would be pointless, but even when I did have broadband I found the quality of the few I did see was pretty bad. I buy my movies, granted I am cheap so I typically wait until the video store sells off the excess rental copies, but I still buy them.
That said though, I wonder about our government resources at a time when we are supposedly so heavily involved in this war on terror. We have government officials visiting chat rooms to bust 16 year old muslim girls and now this huge sting not about terrorists or some major risk to our country but over dvd's and games.
So while I don't really think alot of some of those who pirate work because it does end up costing those of us who buy it a bit more to make up for their behavior, I also have to wonder....Don't we really have better things to do with federal agents right now?

I agree on the limited piracy because if you really did like more than one of the songs you would buy the CD.
I have mixed emotions on it but thought it was important to point out that the feds should have more important things to do right now.
Supposedly we are at war and there are terrorist cells operating here, so unless they are dealing in pirated dvds and games? Think I'd much rather have them focus on that rather than mainly college kids trying to download Star Wars.
