Taking Justice into your own hands.....

Here in Toledo there has been a local story that has created quite a bit of discussion on this topic. From the Toledo Blade some of the facts we do know.

The sheriff's office said the girl (aged 5) accompanied a young adult relative to the Gonzalez house for a graduation party when the sexual assault was discovered about 2 a.m. Sunday. The girl told detectives that Mr. Gonzalez said he had a toy for her, picked her up from the family room where she and others were sleeping, and took her to a bedroom, where she was assaulted.

The girl, who was later treated at Toledo Hospital, told detectives that Mr. Gonzalez held a plastic cigarette and blew smoke into her mouth and eyes. Detectives found a pipe at the scene and are having it analyzed for drugs.

The suspect's wife, Victoria Williams-Gonzalez, awakened and did not see the girl from where she was sleeping. She looked for her and found a bedroom door barricaded from the inside. She shoved the door open and found her husband and the girl naked, Detective Mark Woodruff said. The detective said Mrs. Williams-Gonzalez grabbed the girl and Mr. Gonzalez tried to grab his wife. Mrs. Williams-Gonzalez knocked out a window screen and yelled for help. Mr. Gonzalez fled upstairs, jumped out a window, and ran to 415 Degenfelder, where he received a pair of shorts from William Johnson.

Mr. Gonzalez left, but was apparently confronted outside by several people who assaulted him and left him lying in the roadway, the sheriff's office reported.

Deputies found him lying along the berm. He told deputies that "no one" assaulted him and bystanders claimed no knowledge of the assault, according to an incident report.

Mrs. Williams-Gonzalez told authorities her husband had been smoking crack cocaine and drinking alcohol, the incident report indicates.

Without focusing on why you would let your five year old child stay at a house with people who smoked crack....or why the wife would even stay with him...

Gonzalez is still in the hospital with a fractured skull among other injuries. Yesterday the media released that he has tested positive for AIDS. The local tv stations of course had to get the reaction of the mother of the five year old victim. She stated she believes he should be put to death and that if she ever sees him or has access to a gun she will kill him. That anyone that knew what he did to her daughter would agree with her. The detective from the sheriff's department when asked about what charges those who beat Gonazalez would face was pretty blunt about stating that they weren't concerned about that at this point, they were working on the investigation as to what had happened to the five year old girl, that was their priority.

It was known from what I understand that Gonzalez had been arrested previously and there was a warning to avoid bodily fluid from him. Raping a child that young is bad enough, to purposely expose them to HIV in addition to a rape?

As a parent, if I had caught someone sexually abusing my child? Emotion and anger would probably take over. It would be hard to be rational and wait for the police to show up.

"Raping a child that young is bad enough..."

Child or not, HIV or not, those individuals who left him laying in the roadway along the berm had the right idea, they just didn't complete the exercise. Personally, I believe his wife had to know of the risk and therefore shares a large part of the blame for this terrible incident.

I don't disagree that the wife while ending up saving the child (unfortunately appears she was too late to prevent the abuse) also should have known that her husband was doing crack as well as having AIDS...I also wonder why the little girl's mother would even let her stay there.

However, the ultimate responsibility lies with Gonzalez for doing this to such a young girl. While I don't suggest we all take the law into our hands, in situations like this when a child has been sexually abused it's understandable that it caused such anger and emotion from the neighbors/family.

I do not have kids of my own - but my step-kids are loved very much and will be protected by all means. My first thought would be to grab my father-in-law's shot gun and perform a little "Boondock Saints" or even some "Reservoir Dogs" on that bastard. Emotions will hit hard but that won't happen until well after I've handed him some punishment. I'm really a nice guy - seriously - but don't mess with my family. ;)
