Mr. Voinovich stunned other senators by announcing that more time was needed to explore accusations against Mr. Bolton.
"My conscience got me," he said after the stormy two-hour session. He said he had gone to the meeting planning to vote for Mr. Bolton, but changed his mind after hearing the case against the nominee made by Senators Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware and Christopher J. Dodd of Connecticut, both Democrats.
From todays New York Times
This comment from the same article was especially interesting:
"I don't know if I've ever seen, in a setting like this, a senator changing his mind as a result of what other senators said," Mr. Chafee said. "The process worked. It's kind of refreshing."
I agree it is very refreshing, and encouraging. I'm not sure whether Bolton will end up being confirmed or not, but the knowledge that, both Republicans and Democrats are not only listening to each other but trying to make sure they know all of the information is a very good thing.
It creates some hope that maybe, just maybe the idea that Congress can respect each other more than has been done in the past isn't some lost cause. Yes I know Voinovich is being slammed by some of the conservative talk show bunch which is why I sent him an email telling him ((BRAVO)) for having the courage to follow his conscience. I'm sure a welcome change from some of the past emails his staffers have gotten from me in the past....
That's twice in one day that Ohio Politicians have impressed me, first Frank Szollosi, a local Toledo city councilperson for not only having a well written blog but for actually responding personally to emails (even ones from people who don't live in his district) and now George Voinovich.
All I can add is...GOOOOOOO OHIO!!!!
